New members registration idea

Post by ArthurFrancineFan on Sun Jul 26, 2015 11:42 pm

So after seeing Snowths posts in the banned users section
http://theslumsofelwood.forumotion.com/t869p30-turquoise-username-aka-quite-dead-means-banned-users

The idea of maybe a couple of questions before a legit person can join sounds like a spiffing idea Very Happy Very Happy

Example
1. What is Arthurs last name?
2. What is the name of the school the Elwood city kids attend?
3. What type of animal is Francine Frensky
4. Does Buster have any brothers or sisters?
5. What is Ferns last name? or mothers name?
6. Who is prunellas best friend?

I would not add Ladonna questions, purely because a lot of Arthur fans to this day are not aware of who she is.
The newer later seasons, Especially the one where Ladonnas family appear is very late into the Arthur series....

So yeah, just a thought Smile To keep the trolls away What a Face

Excellent idea but they would probably look it up. How about have a time limit to how long they can answer the question?

Yes, that sort of thing comes with the registration process, so when you put your email and username, you answer the questions and then join up. If a question or two is wrong then they cannot sign up?
That way a person cannot look up ALL the answers on a wikia page
I do think asking later questions might be hard as Ladonna did not show up for a loooong time. TBH I did not know who she was until I started reading fanfiction last year and then Seasons 15-17 aired here, ending with the finale of Season 17, so i am not the expert myself.
The rego process might help people get into watching episodes again Very Happy Very Happy

The first 4 questions could work, but 5 and 6 would be hard depending on how many episodes they've seen.

The point of a trivia question would be to prevent automated spam, since computer programs can't answer them. But depending on how willing someone is to find an answer they don't know, it might discourage average people from registering as well.

It was just an idea to avoid trolls.

This isn't about preventing spambots from registering accounts (that's what CAPTCHA is for), we're talking about curbing trolls and troublemakers from getting in here, as we've had an influx in them as of late, and frankly, it needs to stop. Again, I've lost count of how many butthurts I've banned just this year alone, we just don't need to put up with the headaches all the time.

As I mentioned previously, the trivia question suggestion needs to include questions that are not too simple, but not too hard, so that we can make sure people joining the Slums are legit fans who are here to join in on our crazy shenanigans, and not more trolls who are simply here to misbehave because this seems like a playground for them to do so.

No, I dont think so. Smile
I mean patty hitler had NOTHING to do with you.
She was what I am pretty sure was a nasty female from the British isles who wanted to get a rise out of me from my Semitic heritage, what she did not know was that other people on here are also of Jewish decent so she picked the wrong forum. Doing nothing about her posts by basically ignoring her and just acting as though it was a bit of joke probably aggravated her.
I have learned not to let it get to me anymore. Its flattering in fact hahah. Such people would spend their time seeking me out LOL

I put her on my ignore list from the very beginning. And I actually did report it immediately because I suspected it was a sockpuppet of mister shitbiscuits.

Yeah, those people who seek you out are cowards. They do this because they are afraid of you because you are unique, talented and special. Because if they saw you in real life, they would be scared sh*tless. The same thing with Sonic fans who hate on me and rant about me. They would be have a heart attack if they saw me in real life!

The problem lay in my openness and vulnerability I think. I skyped them because they basically gave me an open invitation to do so.

All right, down to business!

Having read everyone's concerns considered the matter (and a big thanks to Snowth and JC for raising this and providing potential solutions), I think that a series of questions along these lines would be a great way of at least preventing non-fans from showing up en masse who have little interest in community participation.  As mentioned in the initial topic, these questions could be researched by anyone who's dedicated enough to gaining access to the forum...but it would at least be a good way to cut down on random trolls trying to get a quick thrill by giving people here a hard time.

I think the best course of action would be to PM the new user a set of questions upon their registration, and given them 24 hours to answer most of them correctly.  They'd have access to the forum for a little while in that grace period, which wouldn't really give them enough time to cause too much trouble if they came here with that sole intention.  The other option of requiring administrator confirmation before they can become active in the first place is somewhat less desirable, as this would create a "blocked" period for legitimate users that might deter them from returning and making those first few points of contact before they lose interest.

I second this BECAUSE since being on here and I am not saying its the slums but it probably is, I have had two instances now where someone/something has tried to access not only my email address (my main one i use at home/twitter/etc) but also I had a notification from AVG telling me someone has identified my location and said person or whoever was located in  "California" Both times.
IP hackers tend to use IP blockers and I am probably going to have to get one now.
Because the location of said blocker/s is CA and San jose etc, I suspect its someone using a service similar to a blocker or various locations. Most likely though this person is NOT from CA but if they are then its just as bad.
So yeah....
Trolls tend to do that. Lucy did it to me. She was from the UK and was en expert hacker as I sadly found out. Sad so yeah.
It might be a good idea to check out the locations first? I know you guys do but perhaps if someone is logging in from several addresses at a time, does that not raise warning bells?
For example four different locations in one night?
