Animal References

Post by Snowth Poogle on Thu Sep 17, 2015 11:47 am

We know that the characters from ARTHUR are all different animals, but the series does a very good job at looking beyond that, and just presenting us with characters that seem like the kind of people we may actually know in our real lives; however, there have been rare occasions where references to them being animals are made - sometimes outright/straight-forward references, sometimes as subtle, throw-away comments.

Buster has perhaps had the most straightforward reference to his species: Art Garfunkel sings about him being, "a sad, sad bunny," in "The Ballad of Buster Buster," and in "The Lousy Week," when the General is the last surviving louse, he sees potential to hatch a new army when he sees Buster walking down the hall and exclaiming, "it's the bunny!" Also, there's one early episode, can't remember which it was, where Buster says something to the extent of, "I'm not made of money, I'm made of fur!"

The fact that Arthur enjoys the A-A-R-D-V-A-R-K rap seems like a very subtle nod to the fact that he's an aardvark. Then, of course, there's the moment in "Draw!" where Arthur attempts to reach out to Francine, who tells him, "Go eat an ant sandwich!"

Speaking of Francine, there's an indirect reference to her being a monkey in "D.W. Tricks the Tooth Fairy," where Arthur finds a stuffed monkey in the museum gift shop that can talk and say, in her voice, "I'm the best athlete in the whole school!" Which prompts Arthur to give us a stunned and confused look.

Not to mention, the time Buster said the one thing that scares him are cat whiskers, and Sue Ellen gives him a strange look for it.

While not any kind of direct or indirect reference, there's an interesting lampshade moment in "The Contest," while watching Andy and friends on TV, which Brain comments, "if they're animals, does their cafeteria serve garbage and bugs for lunch?"

from what I can tell its like how most people view, say, hair color. so it would be like buster made a 'dumb blonde' joke and sue ellen was blond. except its their species. Cousin Mo Sue Ellen Molly

In "Gleeped" and "Arthur's Birthday" Buster was called "The rabbit."  He said "I am made out of fur, not money" in "My Club Rules."  In "Sue Ellen gets her Goose Cooked" Buster mentioned his ear-robic exercises, and his computer game name is antennaears.  Arthur's computer name is antmuncher.  In "To Tibble the Truth" the Tibbles said Arthur's nose is too small.  I always assumed Fern was named for the dogs in Where the Red  Fern Grows.

Again, Buster's just about the only one whose ever been outright mentioned to be a bunneh - and multiple times at that.

Ratburn is a special case: his name reflects being a rat, and of course, the kids have often given him the not-exactly-affectionate nickname of "The Rat," any references or mentions of him being a rat are clever, yet subtle, such as this remark Francine once made about Muffy: "She's a bigger rat than Ratburn!"

In "Big Brother Binky" George responded to Binky's homemade Moose antlers. Does anyone else find it strange that Sue Ellen is a vegetarian since cats are extremely carnivorous.

I think that episode was written clearly because someone on the writing or production staff had an agenda and wanted to try to shove their lifestyle onto kids through a character on the show . . . I mean, why else would they talk about going vegetarian on a kids show, when kids should be taught to eat a healthy and well-balanced diet that also includes meat? Sue Ellen probably didn't seem like an odd choice, considering she protested the new Chickin Lickin' moving into the Sugar Bowl, one reason being that she doesn't like chicken; $00$!e's that kind of tree-hugging granola girl, so they probably decided she was the most logical choice to go vegetarian.

I have never understood why they have house pets, since they are animals themselves or are the anthros? I mean they are clearly a species by their faces and references but Pal and Nemo are full cat and dog, so what would we call the cast? Part Aardvark? Also, if there are part pigs and part cows in the show, isn't it kind of wrong for them to be eating meat?

Well, I remember on ROCKO'S MODERN LIFE, Heffer's been seen eating hamburgers and steaks on occasion.

I like how Brain pointed out the flaws in "The Contest." Does their school serve them bugs and roots.
How can a mouse own a dog? Wouldn't the dog eat the mouse?
Francine, he's not a mouse. He's a... I forgot what he is.

Can you imagine how strange and awkward it would be if, say, characters like Fern or Binky had pet dogs? If Sue Ellen or Jenna had pet cats? If Buster, Molly, or Marina had pet bunnies? If even Francine or Muffy had pet monkeys?

Another subtle bit of irony is that in "Jenna's Bedtime Blues," among the rumors the other kids were spreading about Jenna was that she strangles cats in her sleep. . . . but, uh, she is a cat.

But take a look at this:

I think this maybe, perhaps, the only time we've seen a non-anthro bunneh on the show . . . and it kind of looks like, well, Buster, less humanized, lol.
