There is a BUG in our midst!

Post by Wild Starry Moony on Fri Jan 01, 2016 7:44 am

Well, kinda.

I think there is something in our ads that has a virus or bug. Sometimes when I use The Slums on my iPhone I get redirected to the App Store or I get popups that say I've won the lottery. From what I can tell this means that there is something on the site put there by shady advertisers so that seemed like the kind of thing to alert the site about.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.  I've poked around a little bit and haven't been able to find anything amiss on my end, but since ads are sometimes regional and based on your IP address, that might explain it.  All the same, I'll report this to Forumotion as a haywire ad that's been causing some of our devoted users problems.

Just in case it's not already installed on your browser or mobile devices, I'd strongly recommend AdBlock Plus.  It's free, and eliminates almost all unwanted/annoying ads you'd otherwise come across:

If there does turn out to be a bug (or a Flutterbye Fairy) buzzing around here, no worries. We'll deal with it accordingy. Wink

Eww, that happens to me when I visit the Slums on mobile too. I have an Android. Actually, there's something called the Adblock Browser app on the app store that you can download and it'll block all of those stupid lottery pop-ups and redirects. Hope this helps (believe me, I share your irritation Evil or Very Mad).

As usual, AdBlock saves the day. Best piece of software ever written.

This is exactly one of the reasons why I've installed more than one adblocker on my browser: you never know what kind of malware, spyware, or trojans are hiding in ads, and they can be a pain in the ass to get rid of. I remember several years ago, in one month, the ads on deviantART infected my computer ten times, and it was always the same thing: I'd just be browsing around the site, and all of the sudden my computer would be taken over by this thing called "XP Security Suite." It looked like an anti-virus program scanning your machine, but it was actually a trojan that installed itself and allowed malware and spyware onto your system; it disabled your browser and would re-direct you to the same trojan over and over again whenever you'd try to navigate to another page, meanwhile anytime you'd try to close the program itself, it would only duplicate itself. There was only one sure-fire method to combat this thing: 1. Open up the task manager and end the process(es) associated with this virus. 2. Launch Spybot to scan and remove it.

At the time, I only had McAfee for anti-virus because it was complimentary with Comcast internet . . . but once Comcast dropped it and I had to actually subscribe to McAfee's service, suddenly the entire program plummeted in quality, but I was fortunate that a friend of mine turned me on to Spybot, because it was the only thing that could repeated remove XP Security Suite each time it infected my computer.

I brought this to dA's attention, and they asked me to link them to the specific ads that caused the problem. . . . the thing of it is, it always happened at random, and I never paid attention to what the ads were actually displaying whenever I'd get infected, so they weren't much help. The final time I got infected, it completely killed my computer's sound, and there was nothing I could do to fix it. Luckily, I got a new computer a few months later, and it's still alive and well.

That, and the other reason I installed adblockers on my browser was so I don't have to sit through commercials on YouTube, Dailymotion, or other video sites . . . I mean, this is the internet, not cable TV, we shouldn't have to sit through commercials that range from 1-3 minutes just to watch a 30 second video of somebody's pet doing something cute. Unfortunately, it doesn't work on Hulu . . . but Hulu sucks now that they make you pay to watch their content (plus, they've removed a few of their shows anyway).

I have AdFender and AdblockPlus for IE. The former is good for general blocking ads, but usually left large empty spaces where the ads were (and YT manages to keep bypassing it); the latter beefs up the blocking, it completely removes ads and the empty spaces left behind, and YT has yet to bypass it (so far).

Spybot's another great piece of free rubbishware protection. I've been using it along with AdBlock, CCleaner and Security Essentials for roughly the past five years, and have yet to encounter a major problem. It's been ages since I've actually invested in a subscription service like Kaspersky, Norton, etc. I've found that those allegedly "more efficient" programs just clog up my system and slow things down.

Is the time on the forum an hour ahead for anyone else? I've noticed this for a while now but never brought it up because it's just a minor thing.

EDIT: It also jumps back and forth between military and standard time, and changes when I refresh the page... strange stuff. Neutral

I do believe it is.  I've also noticed this from time to time, but just figured it's because we like to operate on our own time around here.

Anyway, I've gone ahead and set it back an hour in the administration panel, but strangely, it still seems to be displaying either an hour later or an hour earlier.  It's possible that it's a bug on Forumotion's end.

The time is still showing up an hour ahead for me, though sometimes when I refresh it, the time becomes correct. You're right, I think it's just a Forumotion bug. Well, as I said before, not a big deal...I just wasn't sure if it could be fixed.

Thanks anyway. I love you
