Interesting anachronism in Return of the King.

Post by Roabe on Mon Jan 25, 2016 9:36 pm

During the tennis match between Muffy and Glenbrook!Muffy (who will henceforth be known in this post as "Guffy") this exchange occurs:

Muffy: This isn't a regulation tennis ball. It weighs a ton.
Guffy: It what they played with in the 16th century, like this racket.
Muffy: That piece of junk? It looks like it could have been used by Henry the VIII.
Guffy: It was used by Henry the V. He was my great-great-etc. uncle.

Some glaring errors about Guffy's claim:
- Henry V was king in the 14th and 15th centuries, not the 16th.
- Tennis was still played using gloves, not rackets, during Henry V's reign.
- It wasn't until the 16th century, during the reign of Henry VIII, that tennis began to be played using rackets.

Either the episode was wrong in its history or Guffy was just talking a load of shit. Muffy was quite correct in assuming Henry VIII would have used that 16th century racket. Still, the episode made it seem like Guffy was right and Muffy was wrong. I call shenanigans!

Wow, good catch!  I like to think that Guffy/Buffy was in fact quite mistaken, and only managed to one-up Muffy in the fail department (which is an accomplishment in itself). Frankly, I blame the bunny ears.  They always seem to knock off a good 10-20 I.Q. points...

I think Mr. Pryce-Jones taught with a book written by whoever was in charge of the facts. He just taught his students how to win.

Guffy's* permanently lidded eyes may be indicative of inbreeding. Perhaps she comes from a royal family after all? They're notorious for keeping it within the family, if you know what I mean.

(* Yes, I know her real name is Buffy. I just like calling her Guffy.)

Still, I was impressed that Muffy knew who was king in the 16th century. Either it was a lucky guess or she had been paying attention in Ratburn's class.

I like to think she is actually really intelligent and just pretends to be a ditz, kind of like Lorelei in Superman III...

I think its funny that her name is Buffy, and Muffy once starred in "Muffy the Umpire Slayer!" much crossover, many awesome.

Muffy's constant playing of the durp card could also help lower expectations to the point that even half-assed accomplishments on her part really wow people.  I'm sure Ed's taught her a lot about the fine art of manipulation.  Hell, it's probably the real reason she was plucked out of boarding school and allowed to intermingle with the plebian class.  Practice, practice, practice...
