Names of characters in other languages.

Post by Roabe on Sun Jan 31, 2016 7:12 am

In the French dub of the show, some of the characters have different names:

D.W. = Dominique Fanny Read, aka Diminou
Muffy = Molly (apparently she had been Molly in the French translation of the books, long before "our" Molly was created)
Alan "Brain" Powers = Alain "Lumière" Powers
Sue Ellen = Suzie
Fern = Flo
Molly = Nelie
Leah MacGrady = Leah Margaret
Grandma Thora = Grand-Mère Laura

Very interesting regarding Molly/Muffy.  Is it just me, or is "Nelie" just way too gentle and pixie-like for an angry doggybuns of the MacDonald variety?

Anyway, a few differences I gleaned from the Hebrew version:

D.W. = Geli
W.D. = Legi

I remember discussing some of the other substantive differences way back when, too. Just to recap: http://theslumsofelwood.forumotion.com/t359-arthur-in-hebrew#5362

Brain - Schlaubi (short form of "Schlauberger" = smartaleck, wise guy, smarty-pants)

They probably changed Fern's name here because "Fern" (pronounced 'FAIR-n') means "far" in German...

And in the German version, D.W. is ALWAYS referred to by her full name, so I wonder how they pulled off the ol' "Dora Winifred" thing? DW's Name Game was definitely dubbed, it was called "Who Can Insult The Best?" over here.

On the subject of the German dub, distribution and variety of it is very scarce: the bad recording of Arthur's Eyes has since been removed from Youtube, and only the intro and a 2001 bumper on Vimeo remain. Of the only 145 episodes dubbed between December 2001 and February 2013,
only 12 were released on DVD. The last episode was "The Great Lint Rush" aired March 4, 2013.
Season 1 original run: December 7, 2001 - January 23, 2002
Season 2 original run: January 24, 2002 - February 20, 2002
Season 3 original run: February 21, 2002 - March 13, 2002
Season 8 original run: December 17, 2007 - December 28, 2007
Season 9 original run: December 31, 2007 - January 10, 2008
(Lights, Camera, Opera!/All Worked Up aired May 22, 2008)
Season 10 original run: January 11, 2008 - May 23, 2008
Season 11 original run: May 8, 2008 - May 21, 2008
Season 12 original run: November 14, 2012 - November 27, 2012
Season 13 original run: November 28, 2012 - January 3, 2013
Season 14 original run: December 12, 2012 - December 25, 2012
Season 15 original run (Final season to be dubbed) December 26, 2012 - March 4, 2013

So there you have it, that's the brief history of Arthur in Germany. Hopefully one day he will return to German TV screens - I wonder what kind of accent they would give Ladonna?

Looking back over this topic, some of the German names really are amusing just due to their randomness.

Boris Beisel...

Sigi...note how they use a predominantly female name for Slink.  It's been brought up in a few past topics that he's actually referred to with female pronouns in some other language versions, Hebrew most specifically.  It just adds to his non-binary nature.

Re: Names of characters in other languages.

Post by ZeGermanArthurFan on Mon Nov 28, 2016 6:17 pm

Well, they didn't directly call him that, "Buster's Carpool Catastrophe" is called "Das Beiselmobil" in German, sooo...
And when you try to say "Buster" in German, it sounds almost like the pronounciation of "bastard" so I guess that's why he underwent a name change.

Arthur's last name means "radish" (as in the plant, not the vegetable) BTW, in case "Boris Beisel" wasn't strange enough...
And Muffy's last name comes from the word 'kauz' - meaning 'oddball' or 'codger'
They named Irwin (Home Sweet Home) "Erwin" (AIR-veen) in German, and since he's a fox, I immediately thought of none other than https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erwin_Rommel

But Dark Bunny takes the crown for having the stupidest name ever:
Golo Gangsterhase (Golo Gangster Bunny) especially, when you consider this, to quote the German synopsis of "The Secret Origins of Supernova"

'Wie konnte sich Golo Gangsterhase, der sich dem Kampf gegen das Böse verschrieben hat, nur für derartiges hergeben?'

roughly

"How could Golo Gangster Bunny, who practically prescribed himself the fight against all evil, advertise such junk?"

Plus, it seems the later the DVDs, the worse the covers:
http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002IJDB2/duckfilm-21
http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002IJDBC/duckfilm-21
http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002X7ITG/duckfilm-21
http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002X7ITQ/duckfilm-21
http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000784V8W/duckfilm-21
http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000784V96/duckfilm-21

I'll say one thing: Arthur's marketing here was a complete MESS! The least they could've done is translate the books first, but to my knowledge, that didn't happen.

I don't think Arthur ever aired in any of the post-Soviet countries, let alone in Russia... But here's the list of the main characters' names written in Cyrillic if anyone's curious. Smile
Артур Рид (Arthur), Бастер Бакстер (Buster), Франсин Фрэнски (Francine), Алан a.k.a. "Мозг" Пауэрс (Brain), Сью Эллен Армстронг (Sue Ellen), Бинки Барнс (Binky), Молли МакДональд (Molly), Ладонна Компсон (Ladonna), Маффи Кроссуаэрс (Muffy), Ферн Уолтерс (Fern).
In the case of D.W. her full name would be Дора Уинифред Рид (D.W.) however there's absolutely no way to just call her by the initials in Russian language which would pose a real challenge for translators of the show.

Two Russian links:
http://joe.pwcsite.com/jemrus/tv/rus-arthur.html
https://www.kinopoisk.ru/film/390383/

Interestingly, whenever I search for foreign-languages articles about Arthur, all of them describe Francine and Muffy as simply "girls" or "friends of Arthur" Guess not many people know they are monkeys...

And how did you find out about it? ;-)

About Arthur not being broadcast in ex-Soviet republics - I write Estonian (I've been learning it since last fall) summaries of Arthur episodes in my pastime. Smile

Episode halves summarized:
The Wheel Deal/Rattad jalgidele (Wheels for [my] feet)
Elwood City Turns 100!/Elwood-Linna sajandik sünnipäev (Elwood City's 100th Birthday)
Fern and the Case of the Stolen Story/Ma vajan lugud! (I Need Stories!)
Phony Fern/iFern (My Purple Friend is replaced by a parody of an Estonian song)
Double Tibble Trouble/Tibble-õed ([The]Tibble sisters)
Buster's Growing Grudge/Varastatud nali (The Stolen Joke)
Kiss and Tell/Suudle teda! (Kiss Him!)
In My Africa/Laula mind laul Aafrikast (Sing me a song of Africa)
Jenna's Bedtime Blues/Kui ma magama, midagi juhtub... (When I Sleep, Something Happens...)
Arthur's Family Vacation/Arthuri perepuhkus
To Eat or Not to Eat/Süüa või mitte süüa
Tales of Grotesquely Grim Bunny/Lugud Sinine Sünge Küülikust (Tales of Blue Grim Bunny)
The Good, the Bad and the Binky/Supermaadleja Emily (Superwrestler Emily)
Kung Fool/Koer Fu (Dog Fu)

More to follow tomorrow, it's late over here...
Anyways, maybe I can bring Arthur to Estonian TV sets when I'm older.
I mean, it already aired in its more popular brother, Finland, so...

Simple, Bastings - ze words "female" and "male" were translated as adjectives and resulting sentences sounded quite terríble. At first I suspected it was ze work of ze infamous Google Translatór, but that thing doesn't use the method of word by word translation in such cases. Very Happy
