Has ARTHUR Been Canceled!??!!!?

Post by Snowth Poogle on Mon Nov 28, 2016 11:38 am

I don't see it on PBS's schedule anywhere! Shocked silent pale affraid scratch

And we were just halfway through Season 20!

But, PBS Kids has been adding a number of new shows lately, so I guess they had to force out some of the older dinosaurs to make room for the new kids on the block, and that appears to be what's happened.

I certainly hope not.  I've been a little mystified about the sudden halt of Season 20, despite several episodes still being in the lineup.  Given how they broke up last season and made us wait several months mid-airing, I'm guessing that's probably what's happening again. :-/

I'm hoping that the remainder of Season 20 isn't just repackaged as Season 21, leaving us with a critical shortage of episodes.  I know these sorts of things happen due to budget constraints in most cases, but...really, now.

I bet the "Viewers Like Them" are still scarred by "So Funny I Forgot to Laugh"!

I encourage any Slumsters who knows Greg Bailey online to email him (politely) about the situation.

Cyberchase has been this way too....

Re: Has ARTHUR Been Canceled!??!!!?

The national PBS schedule has moved Arthur to the 6:30 AM and 5:30 PM time slots (eastern time)-- both of which are "fringe" time slots in terms of PBS Kids programming. Honestly, I'm kinda glad they moved the previous 3 PM time to 5:30 PM; aren't most school-kids still in school at 3?

I'm hoping Arthur doesn't go the way of other shows, like Martha Speaks and Cyberchase (as MarleyandPal96 mentioned), which were still "premiering" new episodes even though many stations had already removed them from the schedule.

Regardless, there is word of a new 24/7 PBS Kids channel being offered by certain local stations which choose to opt in to the service as a sub-channel. It's also supposed to be live streaming on the PBS app and pbskids.org. I'm almost certain that Arthur will appear on that program line-up (I mean, 24 hours = 48 potential time slots...Arthur HAS to appear somewhere, right?) It launches in January, but no official schedule is announced from what I can see. Maybe if your station has seemingly "cancelled" Arthur, it will reappear in a month or two!

I can confirm that ARTHUR is not on at 5:30 . . . or, at least, not on my PBS (which I'm pretty sure has long since adopted the national schedule), local programming is on at 5:30.

I do, however, see that it is on at 6:30am, but who wants to live at 6:30am?

It's around the holidays, so they are probably busy with the specials and such. Don't worry, they have many fans of every show, and they have a huge corporation, so none of the shows are slowing down.

So... This is it? I heard the 20th season was supposed to be the shortest, but are "Bud's Knotty Problem" and "That's My Grandma" really the last episodes we'll get this year? Neutral

Re: Has ARTHUR Been Canceled!??!!!?

Post by MagicToolBox on Sun Jan 15, 2017 8:33 pm

Can we talk about how they missed a perfect opportunity to air "Arthur Loses His Marbles/Friday the 13th" last Friday?

Starting January 16, PBS will be rolling out a national 24-hour PBS Kids channel. Many markets, mine included, already have one independently, so this new channel is just going to replace the one we have now. The good news is that this new channel, at launch, will be airing Arthur SIX times a day with two unique episodes (each of the three back-to-back hour slots are the same two episodes each day). The first half hour will have the episode from the main rotation with the newer seasons while the second half hour will be part of a second rotation that airs older seasons, which is currently on Season 1! This will start with "Based on a True Story" and "Bully for Binky/Misfortune Teller" on Monday, then "Flippity Francine/Muffy Takes the Wheel" and "Arthur's Tooth/D.W. Gets Lost" on Tuesday, etc. Those of you who don't already get two rotations of Arthur locally, you're finally in for some old-season reruns! The channel will also be streamed online. However, the second rotation with the older seasons is not played on weekends. Instead, both slots of the Arthur hour are repeats of episodes from the first rotation (newer seasons) that aired earlier that week.

Here is the 7-day launch schedule in Central time. The Arthur hours will be 8:00 AM, 9:00 PM, and 5:00 AM Eastern. Note that on the channel's first day, the Splash and Bubbles movie "One Big Ocean", which is an hour long, will be airing three times in place of both Nature Cat/Ready Jet Go! hours and the 9:00 PM EST Arthur hour. Also, some local programming may be incorporated independently. My local station will continue to pre-empt the 4:30 PM slot (Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood) with the live statewide "Homework Hotline" show on Monday-Thursday.

I am so psyched that reruns of Fetch! are back! Channel 13 aired it until around 2013, but only on Sunday mornings. They'll also be starting with the first episode of Season 1 and continue in order. Nice to see Clifford back, too. My local 24-hour channel has been airing it overnight but it had continually been getting dropped and restored from the schedule since it's the oldest ended show my channel still airs, and that will be the case for the new national channel, too. Would be nice to see other classics like Zoom, Maya & Miguel, Postcards from Buster, Dragon Tales, Mister Rogers, or Reading Rainbow in the future. Wonder why Martha Speaks and Curious George aren't here. They may have ended, but they're still recent...

These were my local PBS stations schedules for PBS Kids programming as of last week, all of which have been airing Arthur. The main two channels, 13 and 21, will remain the same while the kids channel will be changing to the schedule pictured above, delayed by one hour since we're Eastern time. (Letters after show titles distinguish different episodes of the same show on the same day. Otherwise, all airings of the same show across all three channels are the same each day)

Yes, this channel would air the same episode of Odd Squad FOUR times a day.

So it looks like my area will be regaining Fetch! and WordWorld, but losing Martha Speaks and Maya & Miguel (which ended in 2007), and Curious George is now gone from the kids channel, but will remain on the main PBS channels for now. I'm going to miss M&M. I watched it a lot when it was running. That, Arthur, Cyberchase, and Fetch! were how my afternoons were spent back in 2005.

I agree about the Friday the 13th. PBS seems to like themed-programming...such a missed opportunity!

As for Curious George not appearing on the new 24/7 lineup...that also surprised me! I believe Hulu struck a deal with PBS/Curious George for exclusive streaming rights on their Hulu platforms. Since the new PBS Kids channel streams live online, Curious George was probably prohibited from being on there. Honestly, I think that's only part of the situation. Seems like a couple years ago, George was airing like 7 or 8 times daily on my local station's subchannels. Now it's only twice each weekday. And not a single new episode since Spring 2015? Something smells fishy... Is PBS phasing out their most popular preschool-age series so soon? I don't know what's up with Martha Speaks. Seems like it was never a really popular show anyways. It will not air at all in my area once the new 24/7 Kids lineup kicks in.

That's the way they've been airing the new seasons for the longest time: they split them in half, and air the first half of the new season sometime in mid-to-late fall (usually like the last week of September or first week of October) and the second half in late spring or early summer (last week of May or first week of June).

I think the rest the seasons are shorter this time is because of the movie and special we're also getting: a TV movie would certainly be the equivilent of three full episodes, so that probably explains for the three less episodes for Season 20 . . . not sure if this haunted tree house thing is a special or a TV movie as well, but that probably accounts for the shortage of episodes for Season 21 as well.
