Triangulating the Location of Elwood City

Post by ElwoodGuy on Tue May 16, 2017 7:42 pm

My brother and I just finished this Arthur research project to pinpoint the hidden location of Elwood City, based on geographical references in the series. Any I missed? Thoughts and suggestions?

Hmm, is your page set for private viewing only? I keep getting a 403 error.

damn, you put a lot of thought into this 0_0
nice work, and i agree, pennsylvania does make the most amount of sense based on what i've seen in the episodes. it's really close to the coast, which makes sense for the beach episodes.

I'd have to go with Pennsylvania as well. After all, Marc Brown was from there (Erie, to be exact). Lakewood Elementary (now Lakewood Preschool) and Millcreek Mall are real places in Erie.

The Boston metropolitan area would be a close second. Marc Brown was living in Hingham, Massachusetts at the time production on the show began, and he said in an interview (which I can't find now) that when he was drawing up Elwood City buildings to give to the animation crew, he used real buildings in Hingham as inspiration. He definitely used elements in the Old Hingham Library as a base for the Elwood City Library...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elwood_City_(Arthur)
The Wikipedia article has a list of the various references to certain states, and quite a few are to Massachusetts where the show is produced. I just consider it to be in a fictional state that is a cross between Western Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.

Durham Region could also be referring to the suburban municipality that is east of Toronto. LINK Another Canada reference.

Oh I know, just that the animators love to throw in references to random places in the Great White North whenever they can. Like in "For the Birds" the park they visit is Point Pelee, which is a real park near Windsor.

I'm still convinced that the show is set somewhere in the New England states.

Wow, how did I miss that?  If they do live in Durham, NC, it would most likely have to be in the Duke/UNC/Wake Forest research triangle.  Once you stray outside that small pocket of civilization, it's pure Compson Country.
