Season 21

Post by CMSAB11 on Sun Jul 23, 2017 10:58 pm

https://aimsbuddyproject.com/2017/07/06/a-new-season-for-arthur-the-champion-of-prosocial-behaviors/

This fall, Arthur’s 21st season premieres on PBS KIDS! In the new season’s exciting adventures and heartfelt stories, Arthur continues to model prosocial behaviors as he navigates through the challenges of childhood with empathy, kindness, and respect for others. As always, Arthur and his friends showcase the importance of being able to communicate effectively when dealing with conflicts, relationships, and everyday issues in the new season’s episodes—whether it’s banding together to save the library from closing or starting a pet toy business. The kids in Elwood City will learn about ways they can work together, help one another, and contribute to their communities.

this article confirms two new episodes apart from the halloween special:

In one upcoming story, “Binky’s “A” Game,” Binky comes face to face with the topic of honesty—one of the key character attributes of the AIM Buddy Project. When Binky gets an “A” on a test, all of his friends think he cheated! Is it possible that Binky actually studied?

and

In another story, “Brain and the Time Capsule,” Brain tackles another one of the AIM program’s key topics—generosity—as he learns that sharing with his friends is not always easy. When choosing what things to bury his time capsule, Brain has to decide how much space in the capsule he would like to share with his friends.

correct me if i'm wrong but i think the halloween special is premiering in october and will kick off a week of premieres like the beastly birthday special did

I already know what happens season 21- I'm apart of it. But unfortunately can't spoil anything not approved. Sorry guys!

Marc Brown Facebook has teaser screenshots for the save the library episode mentioned briefly in the opening post, but new users can't link things from there untill 7 days. Sue Ellen looks to be a main influence.

Re: Season 21

Post by PrettyCoolStairs on Fri Aug 04, 2017 11:33 pm

KUED has posted air-dates in October 2017 for the first three episodes, along with the Halloween special/movie. I'm hesitant to specify an actual "premiere" date since their programming schedule has significant gaps throughout the month and delays Arthur when compared to the national lineup.

KET has the full episode list:
#2101 "Binky's A Game/Brain and the Time Capsule"
#2102 "The Master Builders" (two-part episode)
#2103 "Francine and the Soccer Spy/Sue Ellen and the Last Page"
#2104 "Muffy Misses Out/Arthur Takes A Stand"
#2105 "Take A Hike, Molly/Slink's Special Talent"
#2106 "The Lost Dinosaur/The Princess Problem"
#2107 "Invasion of the Soccer Fans/Pal and the Big Itch"

I hope and pray there's a Season 22 announcement soon, because a Pal episode is NOT a proper way to end this series.

Re: Season 21

Post by CMSAB11 on Sat Aug 05, 2017 2:37 am

I found some descriptions for these episodes from the same sources that PrettyCoolStairs listed, so I'll go ahead and post them here. I could only find descriptions for three of the episodes, so I'm assuming that the premiere week in October is going to be similar to the one in May. They'll probably air the special on a Monday, air three new episodes over the rest of the week, and then replay the special on Friday. I second that Season 22 announcement.

"Binky's A Game/Brain and the Time Capsule"

When Binky gets an "A" on a test, Muffy and Francine are convinced he cheated. Is it possible that Shelly "Binky" Barnes actually studied? Brain makes a time capsule and gets overwhelmed by people asking to have their special belongings included. Will he make room for his friends, or will he give them the boot?

"The Master Builders"

Buster struggles to build a birdhouse that will save the community garden from pests, while Muffy and Francine design a cat toy that they think will really change the pet toy game.

"Francine and the Soccer Spy/Sue Ellen and the Last Page"

When Ladonna befriends a new member of the Mighty Mountain soccer team, Francine becomes convinced she is leaking top secret team info. / The City Council has voted to close the Elwood City Library! Can Sue Ellen save the library before it's too late?

Initial thoughts below...

#2101: Why does the description call out Binky's given name "Shelly"? Is that going to be a main point in the episode again? I didn't really care for the first episode about his name, to be honest.
#2102: An episode about the community garden has to have Fritz in it. I like his character and am hoping he'll show up! It is weird to have a 2-parter as the second episode of the season. Most of the others have been season premieres or finale episodes.
#2103: Yay a Ladonna episode *sarcasm*... How can Elwood City get rid of the library? Lakewood doesn't even have a library in their own school, do they?

Actually looking forward to Ladonna vs. Francine face-off. It would be like the youngest Frensky she's being upstaged by the long-eared Louisiana girl and decided to kick her butt. Very Happy Wonder which Might Mountain student is going to be Donna's new friend and if they'll get a speaking role.

Re: Season 21

Post by CMSAB11 on Sat Aug 05, 2017 5:48 pm

i can't really say how i feel about "binky's A game" yet, i will say that he's developed so much over the past 20 seasons that i don't know if i can see him cheating at this point. he's stupid but i don't think he would commit academic dishonesty, he has something of a moral compass despite being a bully. in truth he's a pretty complicated character. i don't have high hopes for "brain and the time capsule,"  i always find episodes where he is the main character dull. the time capsule aspect is neat, but other than that i don't see anything else exciting in the premise.

i'm so psyched for "the master builders" because we haven't had an episode featuring the community garden for a while and the concept seems really new and fresh. even the b-plot of the special with the cat toy is really interesting. also, like prettycoolstairs mentioned -- FRITZ! i miss him, he and buster were good friends too. ):

i have to concur about "francine and the soccer spy," the description seems kind of bland. i don't really know what to make of it at this point. "sue ellen and the last page" seems a lot more interesting. i'm guessing they want to close the library because of the rise of ebooks and the argument that they're more environmentally friendly than paper books. still it doesn't make much sense, the library has so many more uses and it's featured so often in the show. still, i'm kind of interested in seeing sue ellen's activist side again.

Re: Season 21

Post by Snowth Poogle on Sun Aug 06, 2017 11:46 pm

I think considering about 2-3 years have past, Seasons 20 and 21 have been completed, and I've received no further word from anybody, that this pretty much confirms that they won't be using the spec script I submitted. I'm really not disappointed though: it was an interesting experience, and Greg was a wonderful guidance throughout the entire process (and even he was surprised I got as far as I did), so at least I can say I did something worthwhile.

Now, as for my interpretations of these titles and descriptions so far, here are my thoughts:

- "Binky's 'A' Game": Why do I get the feeling this is going to be like that HEY ARNOLD! episode where Helga and Harold's test results got switched and Harold was convinced he was a genius, while Helga was convinced she was dumber than dirt?

- "Brain and the Time Capsul": This plot has already been done in many shows before; M*A*S*H had a time capsul episode; ED, EDD N EDDY had a time capsul episode; I think even COW AND CHICKEN had a time capsul episode. All I can say is this will probably end up being an episode full of Continuity Porn.

- "The Master Builders": Honestly doesn't sound like a very strong plot, and it really doesn't even sound like it has enough of a spinal column to be a 2-parter.

- "Francine and the Soccer Spy": Question! How many soccer-related Francine episodes does it take to bang our heads into a wall?

- "Sue Ellen and the Last Page": As much as you guys think it's a cockeyed and perposterous idea, I think this is actually more true-to-life than you think; in this day and age of digital resources, and information on a variety of different devices - not to mention our post-modern society's anti-book mentality - libraries are really falling by the wayside, and many of them are desperate to get people to come in and visit. But, I will agree, this does also sound like it could be a rehash of "Sue Ellen Chickens Out."

- "Muffy Misses Out": Let me guess . . . Muffy becomes too wrapped up in herself, or something she's obsessing over (a new gadget, a new toy, a new fad, something), and ends up neglecting her friends and the fun activities they're doing in the process? Or, maybe it'll be a rehash of "Arthur Rides the Bandwagon," and she'll find herself in Arthur's position when he was mising out on the Woogle fad?

- "Arthur Takes a Stand": Another anvilicious episode where Arthur protests something that kids his age wouldn't normally protest?

- "Take a Hike, Molly": Molly takes up hiking, and finds that she actually likes being in the great outdoors and being one with nature, but fears it may ruin her rep and street cred?

- "Slink's Special Talent": Somebody remind me again why Slink is a Tough Customer when he was originally a Mighty Mountain kid? Anyway, I'm going to assume this is like Rattles and his secret appreciation for the finer things in life like chess and culinary creations.

- "The Lost Dinosaur": I'm going to guess that this will be like "D.W.'s Blankey," only this time, Bud loses Rapty.

- "The Princess Problem": A rehash of "Kiss and Tell," where D.W. develops a princess complex after Emily says something happened to her that made her a princess? Or a rehash of "Background Blues" where Muffy is desperate to find some trace of royalty in the Crosswire family tree?

- "Invasion of the Soccer Fans": . . . What?

- "Pal and the Big Itch": Forget it.

Let's all agree to meet back in this thread and see how many of my predictions actually come true.

Re: Season 21

Post by Roabe on Mon Aug 07, 2017 6:20 pm

My thoughts on a few of the episodes...

The Master Builders - A really odd plot for a 30 minute episode. It would be interesting to see how it pans out, but for now my reaction to that synopsis is pretty "meh". Seems like another Castles in the Sky or Spar for the Course to me.

Francine and the Soccer Spy - I'm with Poogle. I'm getting annoyed with almost every recent Francine episode being about soccer or some other sport. They're really turning her into a one-note character as of late.

Sue Ellen and the Last Page - How can Elwood City, with its wealth of stable schools and other civil services, close its library? I suppose a topical episode like this is necessary in this age of instant access to information rendering public libraries obsolete, but I can't really see a town like Elwood City struggling to keep its services afloat.

Slink's Special Talent - Sounds like another one for the "bully actually has a soft side and is talented at stuff" trope. They already did this with Binky, Molly and Rattles. Alright Slink, prepare to be known as Binky 4.0

Muffy Misses Out - Muffy has a case of FOMO? Maybe she gets in trouble at school and can't go on a field trip with Francine and the rest, and has to miss out on all the cool stuff they'll be doing. I've seen this in a couple of other shows, and with this show's recent trend of ripping plots from other series, I can only assume that's what this episode will be about.

Re: Season 21

Post by Jekyll Jekyll Hyde on Tue Aug 08, 2017 2:28 am

Hmmm... rehashes... clichés... awkward characterization... yeah, guys, I think it may be time to let Arthur bite the dust as of the end of season 22 (I sincerely hope that whenever the final season is in production, they will bring back Joe Fallon to write some more episodes and commemorate the show's history).

"Binky's A Game": Not a particularly compelling plotline. The title is actually more interesting due to its double meaning if read another way - is Oasis Animation subliminally attempting to convince us that, after we thought we knew him for 21 years, that Binky Barnes is in fact, A GAME?!

"Brain and the Time Capsule": 'Let's have Brain do a brainy thing like bury a time capsule because that's what smart people do so that's what the Brain does. Hurdee hurdee hur.'
Cynicism aside, I hope this episode will be an improved version of 'The Best Day Ever', having the logic and capacity to reference older (as in seasons 1-4) episodes without basically giving them the equivalent of a child's bargain crayon scribbling on fine artwork. That's the way to execute a rehash well, guys (actually use the opportunity to improve episodes with glaring issues instead of soiling the names of both the original episode and the rehash).

"The Master Builders": I appreciate the Arthur writing team remembering the community garden and Buster's role in its upkeep, but the two plots are so disconnected in such a weird way that it makes me aware that this episode was probably written to push some kind of educational engineering program or to appease demands from the higher-ups dictating the show's educational content.

"Francine and the Soccer Spy": Agree with Snowth Poogle and Roabe (the latter having changed their avatar from the Fern/Muffy embrace of the Elwood City Central days) - we just don't get many episodes like 'Stolen Bike' or 'Francine Redecorates' anymore (in fact, I'm beginning to wonder if the writers even realize Francine has an older sister anymore - asides from 'Surprise!', Catherine's pretty much been forgotten since the 9 Story takeover). I sincerely hope that Ladonna's new Mighty Mountain friend will be an ordinary kid, instead of a cultural minority or a kid with some condition or disability for the sake of the writers shoehorning in more needlessly hamfisted educational content on acceptance - we already have Ladonna herself in addition to Marina, Carl and Lydia, guys.

"Sue Ellen and the Last Page": NO, NOT MY BOOK! DON'T CLOSE THE LIBRARY BEFORE I CAN CHECK IT OUT AGAIN! IT'S SO COOL I CAN'T KEEP AWAY!

References to how I mixed my potion aside, the only way they can redeem this episode from being a rehash of the already-heavy-handed 'Sue Ellen Chickens Out' is if they do the following:
Have the title mean something in a literal sense. Give Sue Ellen a conflict by having her read, say, the first book in a series, which ends on a cliffhanger. Sue Ellen is naturally irritated, so have her go to the library to find the sequel, only for it to be absent. Also show that the library computers are in bad shape and outdated due to lack of funding. Miss Turner (who seems to have evaporated into thin air since around the end of the Fallon era) then explains to Sue Ellen that there aren't enough people using the library, nor providing funds to buy new books or maintain the building, so they have had to reduce their selection of books. Everyone's favourite book lady may also be aware of the impending doom of closure (damn, now how are the Elwood City kids gonna have fun? And they didn't answer everyone's question, WHO IS DEWEY?), so have her sound solemn and slightly unsure of the grim future ahead. Have Sue Ellen find out the next morning after she solemnly leaves the library that the Elwood City Council have voted to close the library in favour of a new electronic store that sells tablets and smartphones up the wazoo (because the council, as the episode should show, clearly believes that kids don't read books anymore). Sue Ellen then decides to organize a protest rally of Arthur, Buster, Muffy, Francine and Brain aimed at boycotting electronics and embracing only physical books, with Binky being a naysayer with his back mysteriously turned on the gang (and closer to his Season 1 personality). They 'march' to the library, where they meet a member of the town council walking out of the library. Sue Ellen is completely confused and calls him out for basically being a hypocrite, but the council member then explains that while he also loves the library, it's an expensive place to run, and the funds simply aren't there to keep it open. The next day, have Sue Ellen use the library computers to find her book's sequel, only for them to crash on her. After Miss Turner explains the funding issue to her, have Sue Ellen and co. raise money through a reading-related charity effort, with Binky still steadfastly refusing to contribute, believing that it's easier to read online books because 'you don't have to turn the pages'. On the day of the library's closure, Sue Ellen and co., bearing funds, march up to the library just as the city council begins to close it. Unfortunately, the funds are insufficient, which is revealed as a crowd of people (including cameos from characters who do actually care about the library, such as the Tough Customers Consumers and the Elwood City preschoolers on a field trip) gather outside the library. The city council then claims that Sue Ellen's protest only represents a small minority of bookworms, and that a wider public opinion is necessary. Chaos ensues, until a voice yells 'QUIET!' and Binky steps to the front of the crowd. He then delivers a heartfelt speech that reading is important, but people should have a choice of what they want to read and how they want to read it - if they want to read physical books or online books, it's fine as long as they read. Sue Ellen is completely shocked as the council reveals they will reconsider their decision. The next morning, the library is announced to be reopening with improved computer services, and Binky reveals his back was turned on the gang because he was secretly reading the sequel to Sue Ellen's book (which the library was selling off earlier), which he gives to Sue Ellen to conclude the episode.

Even if they don't follow a plot akin to this, I will be damned annoyed if they do not include the Library Card song in there somewhere.

"Muffy Misses Out": The only thing I can say about this cryptic title is that I hope it isn't referring to Muffy missing out on character development.

"Arthur Takes a Stand": For the love of God, please don't be a rehash of 'On This Spot'. That episode was dull to the level of being coma-inducing.

"Take a Hike, Molly" / "Slink's Special Talent": Grouped together because both episodes appear to be based around a similar structural concept: a Tough Customer Consumer discovering a new passion or talent of theirs to lift the character neglect they have received for the past five season (in particular, Slink, whom we have almost never seen as a character). "Slink's Special Talent" does seem pretty narratively generic and derivative of other Tough CONSUMER character arcs, but I'll take what I can get if it means finally giving Slink a focus episode.

"The Lost Dinosaur": Bud loses Rapty. Can I say 'thank God' to this? Rapty contributed virtually nothing to the show.

"The Princess Problem": Either a Muffy or D.W episode based on each character's interests, and with the lack of preschool-centric episodes in the season thus far, I assume it's a D.W episode.

"Invasion of the Soccer Fans": I don't even want to know. Are the fans the aliens who stole D.W's snowball, or was that me in the guise of my potion's effects?

"Pal and the Big Itch": Presumably a time-waster of an episode where Pal gets an itch.

Yeah... not many high hopes for this season.

I hope to submit an episode whenever I get around to it. I hope to some time during next year but that is if they haven't canceled The Arthur Show. They are making so few episodes now and it is unlikely they are looking for new character development such my Sickle Cell idea.

Actually I am going to keep your comment about this episode because you are probably Correct about it. Even if I do not like Hey Arnold! I agree with everything and can't think of anything different to say.

- "Brain and the Time Capsule": This episode is probably going to be neither spectacular nor unbearable. But I really like other Brain episodes where he is extremely cunning. He says he is not interested in being on TV. Everybody else thinks he is camera shy but a plot twist happens when everybody else is camera shy and he knew it the entire time! You can't get much better than that. So this Time Capsule episode is probably going to be disappointing.

- "The Master Builders": This is probably going to be a Greenhouse episode or something.

- "Francine and the Soccer Spy": I think it is time to write out the Francine character.

- "Sue Ellen and the Last Page": Since everybody is playing with Smartphones, nobody is interested in books anymore. Another much needed episode. However, I will not like this episode if they don't include Becky. She only was in two episodes as a librarian appearing both times with Mrs. Turner. In the first episode: "Arthur And The Real Mr. Ratburn." they both have uniform style clothing. But in other appearances, Ms. Turner wears her purple dress, beige jacket, and numerous watches meaning that Ms. Turner is the library administrator but cannot possible run the entire huge library by herself. Her next episode is the James Hound episode but it is time to bring back Becky. If they are going to have a library centric episode for the first time in over a decade, they must do it right.

- "Muffy Misses Out": Muffy is unable to afford the latest trend. Her family tells her no for the first time since forever.

- "Arthur Takes a Stand": If this episode does not involve him playing the piano while standing, I am not interested.

- "Take a Hike, Molly": This episode is probably about Molly hiking. This is a much needed episode because the other tough customers have "sensitive" hobbies so it is time for Molly to also have one.

- "Slink's Special Talent": Somebody remind me again why Slink is a Tough Customer when he was originally a Mighty Mountain kid? Anyway, I'm going to assume this is like Rattles and his secret appreciation for the finer things in life like chess and culinary creations.

I am keeping that because I agree with it. I also think that this episode is not necessary because having Molly's secret sensitive hobby is enough for this season. Include Slink in a future episode, even though he is really supposed to be a Mighty Mountain student. I also think a "Special Talent" episode should focus on the Brown Floppy Eared Dog from Arthur's Big Hit.

- "The Lost Dinosaur": This episode is another that is only enjoyable if done right. Bud thinks he is a tough guy and also adorable, in other words ... everybody loves and admires him. In reality, he is a whiney wimp that fusses too much. This episode could bring out his true colours. If Pal secretly stole Rapty, then I will have more respect for Pal.

- "The Princess Problem": An episode where Muffy and somebody else ... perhaps at Mighty Mountain ... fight over a contest for The Best Princess.

- "Invasion of the Soccer Fans": . . . If this is not a space alien episode, I am not interested.

- "Pal and the Big Itch": This episode is probably going to be similar to Sick As A Dog. Or perhaps it will be an annoying Talking Pal episode.

Okay, here's my much belated take on at least one of the episode titles that interests me (big surprise, I know).

Take a Hike, Molly

I like to think that this one will take on a more figurative meaning.  As part of her ongoing attempt to reform herself, Molly will make repeated attempts to fit in with society like a civilized human being (or a least a very well-tamed doggybuns) and repeatedly fail at it because she's just too rough around the edges.  As a result, she'll find that she keeps getting left out of activities, kicked out of public places, and receiving the same sort of treatment in return.  The overall moral of the story will be something along the lines of how it's not enough to just want to be nice - you have to learn how to act nice for it to work out.

That, or it'll be a moral-barren and wholly disappointing episode about Molly making a non-spoken background cameo for 0.1 seconds while Kate, Pal and Carl go on a GREAT BIG MAGIC HIKING ADVENTURE!!! Rolling Eyes
