What to watch when you cannot sleep

Post by ArthurFrancineFan on Mon Nov 06, 2017 2:35 am

I like musicals
I tend to watch the music clips when I cannot sleep from

  • Chicago
  • Hairspray
  • The phantom of the Opera
  • Cabaret (maybe this time)
  • The Rocky Horror picture show

To name a few

Bedtime movies are actually an important part of my routine.  I have a handful of documentaries and films that I can easily drift off to due to their quiet, calming atmosphere.  Here are some of my favorites:

The Tibetan Book of the Dead: The Great Liberation / A Way of Life

This is a two-part series narrated by Leonard Cohen documenting the practice and history the Tibetan Book of the Dead and lifestyle of the Tibetan Buddhist culture of Ley.  While I'm not a Buddhist myself (or religious at all for that matter), I nonetheless find that many of its principles resonate with me on an ideological level.  The content of this series is absolutely fascinating, but it's Cohen's deep, trancelike voice that ultimately gives it sedative value.

Bardo: Awakening from the Dream

This is a brief narrative, again, discussing the Tibetan Buddhist concept of "Bardo," or the intermediate state between life and death as explained by, well, a rather spiritual looking German guy with a heavy accent and a soft voice.  The background music is calm in an otherworldly kind of way, and I find I can loop this almost indefinitely without becoming tired of it.

Babaji

I'm really not sure, but it's apparently worth saying 108 times.

In Search Of...(with Leonard Nimoy)

Basically any episode from this vintage series can put me to sleep in no time.  It covers a smattering of paranormal possibilities like ghosts, aliens, etc. and other historical mysteries, and as with most of the other entries here, it's the combination of Spock's voice and retro 70s/80s public broadcast type music and sound effects is just so damn relaxing...

In Search of the Dark Ages (with Michael Wood)

I don't believe this old documentary series has any connection to the previous entry, but by whatever coincidence, it's just as relaxing.  Instead of covering paranormal topics, it focuses on a selection of key figures from the Dark Ages.

Lucifer Rising

I believe this one is public domain.  This is an art film with a psychadelic presentation that includes a variety of occult themes and references (and even a few UFO's for enthusiasts).  Its soundtrack was actually composed by incarcerated Manson family member Bobby Beausoleil.

Carnival of Souls

This one's a public domain low-budget cult classic reminiscent of the original Twilight Zone.  Something about the quiet, eerie tone of the movie makes it easy to drift off to.  It also packs quite a twist, especially considering when it was released...if you can make it to the end without falling asleep.  I've cycled this movie through entire 8-12 hours sleep cycles at times, and it never wakes me up.

L'Age d'Or

Another black-and-white classic from the even earlier Surrealist era, this movie was put together to deliberately make absolutely no logical sense whatsoever according to its filmmakers (one of whom was none other than Salvador Dali himself).  That said, it does contain some seemingly specific barbs against the political/religious establishment of the time.  Some highlights include a small dog being punted like a football, a flaming giraffe being thrown off of a high-rise balcony, and a young boy being shot dead (and then shot again) for no apparent reason.

Documentary on Pablo Picasso

Documentary on Frida Kahlo

Arthur's Camping Adventure

Of course, no list would be complete without Arthur's Camping Adventure.  The endlessly looping background music doesn't really get tiresome so much as it fuses into your soul and becomes part of you.  The entire playthrough is like a strange dream, with its slightly off-kilter voices and depictions of our favorite characters.  It's like a typical dream you might have where there's just...something...a little askew about an otherwise mundane moment in your daily life, but not in a way that's at all disturbing.  Instead, it's really very disarming.

Now in way of full length movies that I'm a little apprehensive about posting links to due to copyright issues...

-Edipo Re, by Pier Paolo Pasolini (1967)
-Medea, by Pier Paolo Pasolini (1969)
-Macbeth, by Roman Polanski (1971)
-Steppenwolf, adaptation of Herman Hesse's existential classic (1974)
-The Holy Mountain, by Alejandro Jodorowsky (1973)
-El Topo, by Alejandro Jodorowsky (1970)
-Inland Empire, by David Lynch (2004)

What a coincidence that this thread was posted this morning. I put on "Fargo" last night. I didn't make it more than about 20 minutes in and I was out like a light. I was drifting off to sleep around the "Where is Pancake's House?" scene.

That murderous look on Gaear's face after he is denied pancakes. Gaear is my next spirit animal after Muffy. Very Happy

One of the Best. Movies. Ever.

Pretty much anything by the Coen Brothers, in fact. No Country for Old Men is another one that puts me out of commission faster than Javier Bardem with a captive bolt pistol.
