what is going on with martin spivak. so apparently he worked at the elwood city times ???? then he went on to start his own tv show full of pseudoscience???? or...buster just thought him up as a undesirable male love interest for his mother and he's like an OC he created in his mind who he later discovered was a real person in "the factoid front" and then he decided to idolize him?? HE'S JUST SO CONFUSING

I presume Buster first discovered him on the show. Buster then imagined him as an undesirable love interest for his mom. The episodes are out of chronological order.

They are definitely out of order. The show's timeline is a fucking wreck. I know there were a couple fans that were trying to construct one a while back but I don't know if they've given up or what...godspeed to them. o_0

I've always simply assumed that the show's timeline repeats every 15 or so seasons in an indefinite Groundhog Day-esque loop - similar to what Meg noted above, compiling an accurate timeline for the show's entire run genuinely is impossible (shockingly noted by an enigma devoted to creating fantastical-but-addictive secret potion) as of "Beastly Birthday", where D.W turns five a second time for some reason. Of course, considering the wildly different animation styles, one could alternatively interpret that the Arthur of season 16-onwards is set in some bizarre alternate splinter-universe (which would actually explain some of the out-of-character behaviour in the 9 Story and Oasis seasons), although that would unfortunately come at the cost of glorious material like the long-standing mystery surrounding Bud Compson's hat and "MAH PAH!" becoming non-canonical. Ah well. I guess we can't have everything. Like a steady supply of suntan lotion in December.

Lotta and I agreed to consider the events of every episode canon, for the most part. If there's a massive contradiction somewhere we decide on what we believe to be the most canonical option. But that's just us. D.W. turning five twice is pretty hard to explain though...perhaps she had a half-birthday in "D.W.'s Perfect Wish" like Prunella did in "Misfortune Teller," and even though she was only turning four and a half everyone just said she was turning five to make it easier ??

In fact, we're willing to go so far as to bend the laws of physics and turn Arthur into a science fiction show if need be in order to explain what's presented to us as the canonical truth.  Things like sitting in the audience watching yourself on stage, Muffy "first appearing" in both preschool and 2nd grade, etc.  We're either looking at some sort of interdimensional crossover within the M-Theory framework, or certain portions of the Arthur continuum are simply dreams or illusions.
