Shrinking number of episode per season

Post by Toyguy79 on Tue Mar 13, 2018 12:38 pm

Is there a reason why the number of episode per season continue to shrink. In the beginning the show had 30 episodes per season and then that number dropped to 15 and later to ten and now the number of episodes had shrunk to seven. Any thoughts on why that is?

It just happens.

Back in the earliest days of network television, many shows were upwards of 40 episodes a season. Then as the 1960s progressed, the number slowly decreased down to 36, then 32, then 30, then 26. By the 70s, 24 episodes a season became a standard, and many shows still follow that today, but that does't mean other shows haven't seen another decrease down to 22 episodes a season.

In the 60s and 70s, many animated shows had 17 episodes a season, but during 80s and 90s, that number decreased to 13. And even that number has fluxuated as well, usually anywhere between 10 (like ARTHUR) to 15 episodes a season.

Meanwhile, other countries and territories like Canada and the U.K. only have 5-6 episodes a season for their shows.
