Is Mr. Ratburn...

Post by Yarden Ratburn on Sat Jun 14, 2014 3:51 am

...aromantic asexual? For those of you who may not know what that means, aromanticism is a lack of romantic attraction, and asexuality is a lack of sexual attraction. Personality wise, The Rat seems like a stereotypical aromantic to me, and given his intense love of cake, which is an asexual stereotype, I could see him being asexual as well. Anyway, that's what I'm hoping, because I'm aromantic asexual, and I love me some Ratburn!

Glad you could join us, Ms. Ratburn!   Smile

I think there's a pretty good chance that Mr. Ratburn is asexual as you mention, as an option to the common belief that he's a closeted homosexual.  I'd be willing to hedge my bets equally on that one (in fact, this might be a good idea for a poll).  Single adults often get labeled as closeted gays since so many people don't really understand asexuality in the same way.  I think his manner of speaking and holding himself in a somewhat effeminate manner make him seem like a stereotypical "queen," though his passion for not only cake, but other intellectual pursuits such as history sort of give me the impression that he could be someone who genuinely attaches to inanimate things instead of people.

It's worth noting that a lot of intellectuals, scientists and philosophers are believed to have been asexual, including Isaac Newton, Immanuel Kant, and Nikola Tesla.  All of them had the same fastidious, focused personality that we see in Ratburn.  I can picture him among their ranks.

Mr. Ratburn doesn't seem the type that's dripping with sexual lust and despair - that's for Ms. Sweetwater.

Actually, his near obsession with cake made me think that he may be pansexual. It's just apart of his character for comedic effect, but I still had that suspicion for some time. However, I agree that it's more likely that he's asexual, he doesn't seem to lean towards any gender. I guess his greatest loves will be his puppets and unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Very Happy

I'd nearly forgotten about those puppets. We haven't really seen anything regarding that hobby of his for decades, it seems. They do tie in to the theme of asexuality and abstaining from real human relationships the more I think about it. Puppets being inanimate alternatives to real people who don't come with the hassle or complexity of a real relationship, that is.

Well male third-grade teachers are quite a rare species (although the content he teaches is more middle school or even high school level) and fits into overall characterization as effeminate.

We do know that his species is prone to cross-dressing...and there was the gay mallrats incident.
It seems that going beyond the boundaries of straight life is fairly common among rats in the Arthurverse.

We're actually still trying to figure it out.  A few of us distinctly recall a scene in one particular episode where Jane and D.W. go to the mall and you can see two male rats sitting on a bench in an intimate position, but none of us can remember which episode it was.  They're visible for only a split second as the camera pans across the screen.  scratch

The cross-dressing was from Family Fortune, with the flashback involving the "Archduchess of Maldovia."
