Casting Arthur Characters...

Post by General Mung Beans on Thu Jun 26, 2014 4:11 am

Arthur has a long and venerable tradition of casting its characters in parodies of various books and movies ranging from Oliver Twist to South Park not to mention more original imaginings such as in D.W.'s story.

For George Orwell's 1984
Winston Smith-Arthur: Both are quintissential "everyman" characters with fairly mild-mannered personalities.
Julia-Francine: Of the major female characters in Arthur, I see Francine as most similar to Julia as they are both athletic and can be harshly critical.
O'Brian-the Brain: Besides the obvious anagram, O'Brian is indicated to be a highly intelligent individual and have a large physique which would fit that of a bear character such as the Brain.
Parsons-Buster: Parsons is a very jolly but unintellectual fellow and by the description of his dwelling, a very messy fellow.
Mrs. Parsons-Fern: Not sure who to pick for Mrs. Parsons, so I went with the quietest and probably the most easily depressed girl in the series.
Syme-Ratburn: Syme is in the book the most intelllectually inclined character excepting possibly O'Brian. Like Mr. Ratburn, Syme is also described to have his own eccentric tendencies.
Big Brother-D.W.: Little Sister is watching you
Emmanuel Goldstein-Sue Ellen: Sue Ellen is exactly the sort of principled of principled opponent that Goldstein is portrayed as

D.W. as Big Brother...loving it.  I can just picture her giant face appearing on screen before the masses.   Very Happy

Here's a selection of the casting choices for my Clockwork Orange parody, A Clockwork Customer.

Alex - Molly.  Molly was so perfect for the lead role, it was surreal.  Both are juvenile delinquents whose character arcs involve reformation, resistance, and finally reconciliation with their evil natures as a result of free will rather than external conditioning/anti-bullying policies.  They both have a very similar hairstyle, and both are in charge of a group of three other malcontents.  There were some other very specific moments in the movie that made this practically a predestined role.  For instance, the movie opens with a homeless man singing about "Sweet Molly" before Alex arrives and beats him senseless.
Dim - Binky.  Another eerily fitting role.  Both are the "dumb, strong ogres" of the quartet.  In the pictured scene, Alex even refers to Dim as a "mindless, grinning bulldog."
Georgie - Rattles.  After Alex, Georgie is the second most dominant group member.  Similarly, Rattles would probably be the de-facto leader without Molly.  I know, Binky's supposed to be the leader of the Tough Customers, but we all know Molly's been calling the shots for years.
Pete - Slink.  Like Pete, Slink's pretty much the follower of in the group, rarely conceiving any plans or doing much aside from going along with what everyone else is doing.

The Writer - Brain.  This was likely the best selection, given that they're both intellectuals who eventually wind up in a wheelchair for one reason or another.
The Writer's Wife - Lydia.  This one's pretty self-explanatory given the close friendship between her and Brain.  That, and Lydia's hair matches the wife's red bodysuit quite nicely.  Alex and Maria also show up in cameo roles during this scene.
The Cat Lady - Bitzi.  I cast Bitzi largely due to her sharing the Cat Lady's giant hairdo.  Both of them can be a little catty at times.  Sue Ellen, Jenna, Pepper Ann and Charlotte Bickles all had bit roles as her many, many cats.  D.W. makes a very special appearance as the phallic sculpture in the background.
The Tramp - John Morris.  Let's face it, we all suspect the old janitor of having a serious alcohol problem, and after he lost the janitor gig thanks to his injury his future prospects were none too bright.

Caligula - Molly.  It was here that I steered from the original film a bit and included some of the more twisted scenes from Caligula, which also featured Malcolm McDowell in a similarly psychotic role as the insane Roman Emperor.  Marina was cast as his sister Drusilla, Sue Ellen as his wife Caesonia, James as his brother Gemellus, and Carl as his mentally-challenged uncle Claudius.
Jesus Christ - Arthur.  Since Arthur seems to usually have the right message in the show and really takes a beating from D.W., the Tough Customers, and pretty much everyone else, I thought it would work well to cast him as Christ for the cameo scenes that Alex/Molly daydreams about in prison.
Satan - Fern.  This was actually from a speed metal video (Meshuggah's Bleed) I worked in for the movie's finale when the forces of evil seize Molly and undo her government brainwashing.  Fern can be pretty sinister in a behind-the-scenes way if you look at her closely enough, so I thought she'd work well as Lucifern. Other demonic figures from the scene include Nadine as the Goddess Atropos, D.W. and her Snowball, and the infamous Brown Dog Tough Customer.

Dr. Brodski - Ladonna.  In charge of Molly's reformation treatment, which she carries out by doing a spiffy little dance to the tune of Devo's Jocko Homo. Grandma Thora, Grandpa Dave and Pepper Ann were also cast as various lab assistants.  I used her outfit from the imaginary scenario in Party Animal where she creates a gourd person a'la Frankenstein.  I thought this role would fit the situation well, since Alex's treatment involved conditioned destruction of his free will, leaving him more of a robot (a "Clockwork Orange") than a human being.  It reminded me of creating a fake person.

Archie Comics. Most of the choices were fairly obvious...

Archie-Arthur
Betty-Francine
Veronica-Muffy
Jughead-Buster
Reggie-Binky (Binky might appear to fit better with Moose but the former is definitely smarter and some episodes hint at a Muffy-Binky dynamic).
Dilton-The Brain
Ethel-Fern
Moose-Rattles
Midge-Molly
Cheryl Blossom-Ladonna
Sabrina-Prunella

Rocky Horror Picture Show parodies are pretty much a cliche anymore, but here goes...

Mr. Ratburn as Dr. Frank N. Furter
Buster as Rocky Horror
Arthur as Brad Majors
Sue Ellen as Janet Weiss
George as Riff Raff
Francine as Magenta
Muffy as Columbia
Brain as Dr. Everett V. Scott
Binky as Eddie
Fern as The Criminologist

What a coincidence, we were just talking about Rocky Horror similarities in chat a few days ago - and some of these roles specifically.  Columbia's voice is Muffy beyond a shadow of a doubt, and some of Magenta's lines during Time Warp fit Fern to a tee:

Yeah, I was originally going to cast Fern as Magenta, then I remembered the Criminologist and cast her as him.

How funny that you guys were thinking up a similar cast in the chat. The show should totally do a RHPS parody.

Another overdone parody: Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Given the number of characters in the movie, I think a ton of ancillary "Arthur" characters can fill them, but I'm just going with the more prominent ones (the ones I can remember, anyway). Feel free to add more.

Arthur as King Arthur (duh)
D.W. as Patsy (Patsy's "It's only a model" comment about Camelot seems like the kind of snarky comment D.W. would make)
Buster as Sir Bedevere
Francine as Sir Lancelot
Binky as Sir Robin
George as Sir Galahad
The Tibbles (and other preschoolers) as The Knights Who Say Ni
Muffy as The French Taunter (because having Muffy shout nonsensical insults in an outrrrrrrageous fake French accent would be hilarious)
Mr. Ratburn as The Bridge Keeper (aka the Old Man from Scene 24)

Re: Casting Arthur Characters...

This one might be a little bit of a stretch, but...Boogie Nights!

Dirk Diggler - D.W.  Naive, hot headed, full of delusions, self-absorbed, and bratty.  Dirk has his red corvette.  D.W. has her Crazy Bus.  Plus, you know what they say about guys with big noses...

Reed Rothchild - Buster.  Goofy friend and wannabe magician.  Pretty dumb, too.  His character was bisexual in the original Boogie Nights prototype film, which might tie in to Buster's willingness to wear nail polish and occasionally women's hats.
Jack Horner - George.  Since George has proven his skill as a director lately, I think he might be a good pick.  Both characters are pretty laid back, reasonably friendly and wear button-up red shirts.  Likewise, both characters occasionally must suffer others who try to take advantage of their generosity.  I was tempted to choose Muffy because of her wealth and business savvy, but...George.
Amber Waves - Bitzi.  They may seem quite different at a glance, but both are divorced redheads who are emotional over their children, a little high-strung, and have overbearing mother complexes.  Both seem to have a hard time staying with one man.  They both seem to be in the early middle-age range, too.
Rollergirl - Sue Ellen.  Carefree, in good shape, seems like a Mary Sue dream girl for a while, but can kick some serious ass when insulted.
Becky Barnett - Francine.  Tough, blunt, short haired, swings both ways.  'Nuff said.
Scotty J. - Binky.  Goofy, plump and effeminate.  Nice guys deep down inside.  Binky has his muffins.  Scotty has his cream puffs.
Todd Parker - Rattles.  Rattles is the resident greaser, so it makes sense he'd be cast as the car-obsessed tough guy.  Both are arrogant, violent, dangerous and even share a leather jacket.
Jessie St. Vincent - Fern.  Quiet, soft-spoken artistic type.  Did I mention she's also a porn star?
Rahad Jackson - Ladonna.  Fast-talking, haywire, jumps mindlessly from one topic to another, out of touch with reality, but incredibly happy.  Ladonna's from a military family.  Rahad has a house full of guns and explosives.
Kurt Longjohn - Brain.  Smart, relatively well-grounded, somewhat overweight, has a lot of technical knowledge and runs things from behind the scenes.
Floyd Gondoli - Muffy.  Smooth, wealthy, wheeler-dealer type.  Shows up uninvited with grand business propositions, and doesn't really care about what you think because he's convinced he's always right.  Occasionally says things that make him look like a complete idiot.

Re: Casting Arthur Characters...

Post by Snowth Poogle on Sun Dec 14, 2014 1:26 pm

I'm surprised I've overlooked this thread, it's really interesting.

Y'know, I can see some minor parallels between ARTHUR and HEY ARNOLD!, and I think I could probably see some of the characters swapping roles, perhaps...

Arthur as Arnold: It's a given; they're both the voice of reason among their groups of friends, but they're also creative and imaginative, and they really serve as the glue that holds their worlds together.

Ladonna as Gerald: This would be a little weird, but I think of all the characters from ARTHUR, Ladonna would be most suited as Gerald - Gerald was known for his tall tales and urban legends, and we all know how much Ladonna loves to tell stories, and maybe even stretch the truth a little when she does.

Francine as Helga: Now, don't start with the whole Frarthur business, because that's really the only aspect where the casting wouldn't work... however, we all know that Helga always pestered and harassed Arnold (because she liked him), and we've seen that Francine isn't above picking on Arthur for one reason or another, and she can be rough-n-tough like Helga, which makes her suitable for the role (and on that token, Catherine could probably fit the bill for Olga, even though it's clear the Frenskys don't show favoritism like the Patakis do).

Fern as Phoebe: It wouldn't really work in terms of Helga's friendship with Phoebe, but again, Fern really fits the bill, because they're both neurotic, studious, and the smartest girls of their respective classes... and they can have mischevious streaks in them, so again, Fern fits the bill as Phoebe.

Binky as Harold: Really, this is a given. Both are large, both aren't very bright, both use bullying as a way of giving them posture and status, and yet they both are really sensitive on the inside and are prone to little crybaby meltdowns. Oh, and they were both held back, too... but Harold must have been held back for years or kept getting held back repeatedly if he had a Bar Mitzvah in fourth grade (that means he would have had to be held back for four years, or four times).

Muffy as Rhonda: Both are the school fashionistas, both come from wealthy families, both tend to think of themselves and put their own interests and agendas above those of their friends, and both are social snobs. Again, it's a given.

George as Eugene: George doesn't appear to be effeminate like Eugene is, but both are really optimistic about life and the world around them and such, so that might a good match. Binky sort of shares the appreciation of the finer things in life like Eugene does, but again, Binky is much better suited for Harold, no question.

Mr. Ratburn as Principal Wartz: Ratburn is too tough a teacher to be the sensitive, touchy-feely Mr. Simmons, so he'd probably be better suited for Principal Wartz, whose had a tendency to be strict and overbearing at times, but with a silly and eccentric streak that Ratburn seems to play very well at times.

Grandpa Dave as Grandpa Phil: It just makes sense.

Mrs. MacGrady as Grandma Pookie: Let's face it, Thora is too sane and too normal to be the eccentric and batty Pookie - Mrs. MacGrady has shown she can be a little kooky herself at times, which makes her a better fit for the bill.

Rattles as Wolfgang: Both are of older grades, and as such, both are in different classes from the rest of the group... Rattles, obviously, is much more of a softie deep down, while Wolfgang appears to be more of a straight-up bully... I don't know, it might work.

Molly: I can see her as one of the sixth grade girls, I don't remember their names, but I remember there was one episode where Arnold and Gerald try to act more mature and end up getting friendly with a pair of sixth grade girls who decide to humor them, but at the same time, they're also using them to their own advantage to make their callous boyfriends jealous... then there was another episode where Phoebe's intelligence level promoted her to the sixth grade, and a clique of them acted like they were taking her under their wing and letter her be one of them, but it turns out there were only using her to do little favors for them (like their homework and errands and stuff)... I can see Molly doing stuff like that.

That's all, except for Buster and Brain. Buster could probably work as either Stinky (neither are really bright, and tend to be simpletons), Sid (impulsive, insecure, but easily goes along with whatever schemes are being cooked up), or even Curly (Buster clearly isn't psychotic like Curly, but he's arguably the craziest one of Arthur's friends)... Brain, on the other hand, he would either be Gerald (token black) or Phoebe (the smartest of the group), but again, Ladonna and Fern are better suited for those respective roles. D.W. could probably be Gerald's annoying little sister (I forget her name at the moment)... then again, Gerald also had a jerkass big brother, Jamie-O, whose dynamics seems to be similar to that of Catherine with Francine, so... I dunno. I thought about Sue Ellen as Nadine (Rhonda's BFF, not D.W.'s imaginary friend), though as I recall, Nadine was an outdoorsy girl who liked animals and bugs and stuff, and Sue Ellen, as we know, has traveled around the world, so I'm not sure how that would fit.

Re: Casting Arthur Characters...

I want to try casting Arthur in my favorite show, so let's see how I can get this to work...

Buster as Hawkeye: Buster could chase aliens the same way Hawkeye chased nurses... but that'd be weird.

Arthur as B.J.: For being the more serious of the two.

Ratburn as Potter: Actually, he could work as both Henry and Potter, but it's difficult to try and cast the ARTHUR characters in the sillier earlier seasons of M*A*S*H.

Francine as Margaret: Oh yeah: tempermental, demand perfection, won't take no for an answer... that's a perfect match, there.

Brain as Charles: I thought about gender-bending and giving Muffy this one, since she's a wealthy and egotistical snob like Charles, but Charles is an intelligent ace who serves as a worthy opponent for Hawkeye and B.J., which would kind of make Brain a better fit for the role.

Marina as Radar: Incredibly poor vision resulting in a highly developed sense of hearing... plus, the bunneh ears work well too.

Binky as Klinger: This seems like a really odd casting choice, but hear me out: Binky's ballet dancing could be viewed in a similar light as Klinger's cross dressing to try and get out of the army... Binky's affinity for ballet could be a way for him to try and get thrown out of school.

Molly as Sidney Freedman: I'm sure Moms will appreciate this one... it's almost a given, with Sidney being a shrink, and Molly being the advice-giver... plus, Molly's got the same kind of deadpan, snarky humor that Sidney has at times.

That leaves Father Mulcahy... ARTHUR hasn't ever really touched on religion, so it's hard to think of which character would be most suited for Mulcahy...
