Molly & James - Mother & Son

Post by A Lotta Moms on Sun Sep 21, 2014 8:44 pm

As many of us well know, it's a long-standing joke around here that Molly is really James's mother and that he's being raised to believe that his mother is his really his big sister and his grandmother is, in fact, his mother (a'la Jack Nicholson and Ted Bundy).  Slumlore aside, it certainly seems that Molly's relationship with James is much more like that of a mother than an older sibling.  For example:

-The way James obediently follows Molly around is reminiscent of the way kids instinctively shadow their parents.  Consider the way he does this in The Last Tough Customer.  When we see D.W. tagging along after Arthur, she's usually bugging him and driving him insane.
-Like a good parent, Molly seems to be genuinely interested in teaching James positive lessons in life.  For instance, consider the way she correct him when he tries bullying Amanda in The Last Tough Customer, or reminds him that it's important to be kind in Last King of Lambland.  This is unusual when you consider how mean-spirited she is most of the time.  Often, older siblings who are habitual bullies treat their younger siblings just as badly (or worse) than their daily victims.
-They never seem to argue, fight, or belittle one another.  By contrast, consider how tempestuous things usually are between Arthur and D.W. or Catherine and Francine.
-Molly tucks James into bed at night.  Older siblings very rarely do this, unless it the sort of situation where there's a large age difference, the parents are deceased or negligent, and the older sibling has to take on the role of the parent.

That said, unlike other "evidence list" topics here that actually do seem to establish a likely truth (i.e. Ladonna being a hare), I'll admit that in all seriousness, Molly is probably just James's big sister.  However, even if she may not be his biological mother, I don't think she's doing a half-bad job as his mother figure.

The thing of it is, Molly's what... in fourth grade? Fifth? I know it's difficult to determine because she looks and acts more like a teenager than a 9-10 year old, but realistically, a 9-10 year old girl having a 3-4 year old son is quite a stretch. Impossible? No... but a stretch? Yes.

Yeah, this one's really more of a "she's so much like his mother" rather than a "perhaps she's actually his mother" situation.  Her looking like a 16-20 year old was a large part of what spawned the initial joke.  Razz

I again noticed her playing the mother role with James in Higher Purpose, calling him out when he wandered astray like a parent would a child.  Since she's still only little more than halfway through grade school herself, it's all the more amusing that their mother is nowhere to be found in potentially dangerous, stranger-filled situations like this.  In real life, she'd probably be charged with negligent parenting and lose custody of both of them.
