Arthur's Big App

Post by 1ToughCustomer on Sat Oct 11, 2014 2:11 pm

Last week I got the new Arthur app out of curiosity, been playing it little by little whenever I'm bored. For anyone unaware of it, here is some more information.

My thoughts on it:
It's mildly amusing to play, it has some funny moments (mainly Arthur being hilariously derp-eyed when he's shown, or all of the other characters' blank expressions when seen straight on), but overall it is not a game I would recommend, as it gets repetitive and boring very fast (only 4 minigames).
It is also surprisingly hard, for a game marketed towards children! There are 5 pages of characters to unlock, they do not really do anything but you can browse all of the characters and tap on them to see either a fact, or a quote from them. I am on the second page of characters and it is already so difficult/fast that I keep losing! Not sure how children are expected to play, haha! I may never get to the 5th page with the tough customers. Crying or Very sad

EDIT: After losing all 5 lives, the game resets back to the easiest setting (without losing all of the characters you unlock), so I was able to eventually advance in the game and complete it.

Did anyone else get the app? If you have been considering it, I don't really recommend it unless you like really repetitive and boring games.

EDIT 2: Just completed the game today! Here are some screenshots of the un-lockable characters as well as the text it gives you about each one if you click on them. Smile

PAGE ONE:

Arthur Read: "Have a wonderful kind of day!"
Pal: The Read family's dog, who speaks with a British accent.
Buster: Loves aliens, and is always on the hunt for UFOs.
Fern: Writes under the name "Agatha".
Ladonna: "Sweet petunia!"
Sue Ellen: Has moved all over the world with her diplomat father.
Mrs. MacGrady: Lunch lady and proud cancer survivor.
Bionic Bunny: "If it doesn't involve flying, battling monsters, or lifting heavy objects, I'm kind of at a loss."
Bitzy Baxter: Editor-inchief of the "Elwood City Times."
Mrs. Compson: Played trumpet in a band when she was younger.

PAGE TWO:

D.W. Read: Plays "Crazy Bus" so often, it drives her family... well, crazy!
Bud: Carries a toy dinosaur named Rapty, who is also his imaginary friend!
Alberto: A talented soccer player AND golfer.
Tommy Tibble: Can whistle. (His brother Timmy can't).
Timmy Tibble: Wears the blue bandana. (His brother Tommy wears the red one).
Vicita: D.W.'s friend and next door neighbor.
Emily: Speaks French, and has an au pair named Marie-Helene.
Amigo: The Molina family's dog. A mix of bulldog and boxer.
Mary Moo Cow: "Moo to you!"
Nadine: "Being an imaginary friend isn't easy!"
Rapty: Bud's imaginary friend.

PAGE THREE:

Mr. Read: "Weird? When have I ever made anything weird? Oops, time to check on my turnip muffins!"
Mrs. Read: "D.W.! What did you do?"
Grandma Thora: A championship marbles player.
Baby Kate: Like other babies, can talk to animals like Pal and Amigo.
Principal Haney: Absentminded, but he cares a lot about his students.
Ms. Morgan: D.W.'s preschool teacher and gymnastics coach.
Mr. Ratburn: Loves homework, and is a talented puppeteer.
Mrs. Tibble: Takes care of her grandsons Tommy and Timmy while their mom travels.

PAGE FOUR:

Francine: Wears her lucky socks to every softball game!
Muffy: "Vomitrocious!"
Brain: Can often be found serving up sundaes at his family's ice cream shop.
George: Played guitar with Koko Taylor and Taj Mahal.
Wally: Was given to George as a Christmas present.
Carl: Loves apple juice (in a box, not a bottle) and trains.
Nemo: Francine's cat, and Pal's arch nemesis.
Ed Crosswire: The proud owner of Crosswire Motors.
Oliver Frensky: Loves telling jokes about being a sanitation worker.
Bailey: "Yes, Miss Muffy?"

PAGE FIVE:

Binky: Shh! Don't tell anybody. His real name is Shelley!
Molly: Created her own animated movie with Francine and Muffy.
Rattles: An excellent chess player.
Slink: Used to be a Mighty Mountain student.
Prunella: A huge fan of the Henry Screever books and movies.
Marina: Dreams of being an Olympic gymnast.
Jenna: Won Lakewood Elementary's athlete of the year award.
James: The first preschooler to survive a sleepover with the Tibbles.
Mei Lin: Binky's younger sister. She was adopted from China.
Paige Turner: "Shhhh!"

So there are all the characters! This is what happened when I unlocked the final one:

Here is what a page looks like before all of the characters are unlocked. I regrettably forgot to take a screencap earlier.

So there you have it! Let me know if you guys would like any additional information or screencaps. Smile

Thanks for the review on this one - I'm thinking about dropping a few dollars and trying it out on Bluestacks (Android/iOS emulator).  I figure if it doesn't work or is disappointing, then at least it wasn't too pricey an investment.  I'm mostly interested in the "unlockable characters" concept.

There you go guys! Updated with lots more information, screen caps, and all all the character quotes! Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to see.

On another note, anyone who edits the Arthur Wiki, feel free to add any of this information over there Smile

I already added most of this information when I beat the game last week. I was going to post a reply on this thread, but editing twenty pages at the same time caused Firefox to crash. My twenty-five minutes put into writing the post was lost. ;(

I'm not sure if publishing ALL of the information is a good idea. There is only so much that should be included.

On the side, this has just been driving me crazy: While iTunes clearly advertises 50 unlockable characters, no matter how many times I count them there are only 49.

Besides that, I will make a very condensed version of my lost post: the wiki may be about the same topic, but the quotes and descriptions in the app were too similar for coincidence. David's quote about the turnip muffins and Bionic Bunny's about being at a loss have both been near the top of their articles since 2012/13. Once I saw those quotes in the app I moved them to a lower place on the pages. You can check the page histories from those years to confirm the quotes were there.

Hah! I honestly didn't even consider checking the page to see if someone had beat me to it! Razz

You bring up some interesting points since I never counted them either, and didn't know about the quotes.
I honestly noticed quite a few typos/small grammatical errors in the quotes too, I was very surprised at that, I counted at least 3!

Hey, thanks for the screenshot and info update, 1Tough!  I still haven't gotten around to giving this one a whirl, but I will soon.

Also interesting and suspicious how closely the quotes matched the signature quotes previously chosen for the Wikia.  On the upside, at least it says that all the work is going to good use.  On the other hand, since it's pulling info in a specific pattern - albeit their own material posted under Fair Use educations/informational guidelines - it would at least be nice of them to include some sort of a thank you or a credit to the community for making it conveniently available.

UPDATE: As of Oct. 22nd, they have released an update for the ap with a new mini game (character dress up?), new fall scenery?, and endless mode for each mini game (so you can play only that minigame). Just downloaded the update so still checking it out. If they continue to update the ap periodically, maybe it wasn't a bad investment after all!

Alright, here's a screenshot of the new game. I chose to take a screenshot of what I thought was the most important costume... being Fern in a maid's outfit. Thought you guys might get as much of a kick out of that as I did ;P

Here's a close up of just Fern, if you wanted it.

Shucks.  Just think of all the different hats we could have been giving him all this time.  Serious missed opportunity there.

Not yet.  I need to see if I can run it on my PC using Bluestacks or a similar program, since my phone is only semi-smart.

That would certainly make a lot of sense, especially considering her voice actress's prolific career as a burlesque dancer. drunken
