Marina's Blindness

Post by #1 Marina Datillo Cultist on Sun Jul 08, 2018 4:12 am

Ho-Ho-Homeless Santa here, merging this into our general Marina Datillo thread.
I think this is the right subform for this, I'm not completely sure, oh well here it goes

This torments me every day, I think about it all the time.

What kind of blindness does Marina have? Was she able to see previously and lost it later in life? Has she always been without sight? I think about this constantly. I even sent an email to an address that was supposedly connected to Marc Brown. I would give anything to know. I need to know the details of Marina's blindness. They announced additional seasons and all I'm hoping for is that Marina mentions if she has  been blind her whole life or not.

Regardless of this, the Marina x Prunella ship is very powerful for me. Prunella is a great surrogate for me because she is mean, awful, and very into astrology and the stars. Traits I can really relate to. I also really like poodles.

Arthur is continuing on in the same sense as The Simpsons, where it is a zombie of it's former self, but I keep hoping for more information about Marina. I will keep taking it in as long as Marina x Prunella is involved. I want to know all I can about Marina. I have even considered learning braille.

Re: The Marina Datillo Thread

Post by Snowth Poogle on Tue Jul 10, 2018 11:13 pm

Some fans have speculated that Marina must have been born with eyesight, but eventually lost it over time, for a few different reasons: namely, her eyes are always open - most people who were born blind almost never open their always; also, her motor skills and body language are pretty impressive for someone who can't see, which is also an indication that she may have had sight at one point when she was learning things, like how to walk and such - not to mention, she naturally turns and faces someone when speaking to her, which would probably be something she learned and developed a habit for prior to vision loss.

Then again, there's also the speculation that the reason she's animated this way is so she isn't too totally different from other kids so preschoolers watching the show aren't too put off by her if she otherwise had more limited range of expressions and movements due to the limitations of her disability because they otherwise wouldn't completely understand.

The easy answer would be to say she was born that way, so as not to have to develop some sort of an elaborate back story, like maybe she lost her eyesight to an eye disease overtime or something. Much like how Connor Gordon came up with the backstory that Lydia Fox is wheelchair-bound because she became paralyzed from the waist down after jumping into the shallow end of a pool, but the ARTHUR writers said she was simply born without the use of her legs.

Huh, TIL that Lydia Fox was originally going to be wheelchair-bound because she horrifically fucked up.
