Meaningful Names

Post by Snowth Poogle on Mon Oct 20, 2014 11:43 pm

I've done threads like this before with other things, so I figured I'd do it here too.

So, anyway, sometimes I like to know the meaning behind names, particularly when I name my own characters, and sometimes I find that certain names work well for certain characters. I went to babynames.com and looked up the names of various characters from Elwood City, and here's what we have for them:

Arthur: Bear (seriously, that's what it means)
Dora (D.W.): Gift (regift it)
David: Beloved
Jane: God is gracious
Kate: Pure
Thora: Thunder (wow)
Buster: Tough guy (AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!)
Francine: Free
Oliver: Elf army (*snicker*)
Catherine: Pure
Ed: Short form of Edward (*shrug*)
Alan: Little rock
George: Farmer
Fern: Fern (duh)
Jenna: Fair phantom
Prunella:: Little plum
Molly:: Of the sea/bitter (the latter makes sense)
James:: Supplanter
Tommy:: A twin (no, really)
Timmy: Diminuitive form of Timothy
Emily: To strive/excel/rival (mmhmm)
Amanda: Worthy of love
Edwin: Prosperous friend
Alex: Defender of the people
Maria: Of the sea/bitter (hmm...)
Marina: Of the sea (common thread here...)
Toby: God is good (but Toby wasn't)
Ladonna: The lady
Bud: Messenger/friend
Nigel: Champion/black
Herbert: Army bright
Sarah: Princess ; Leah: Weary

Here's a few I forgot:

Alberto: Noble and bright
Ramon: Counsel protection
Chip: Diminutive form of Charles
Nadine: Hope (interesting)
Shelby: From the town of Hollow
Carl: Manly (*snicker* I've never met a Carl who fit this description)
Lydia: From Lydia (as in the Greece city)
Bailey: Bailliff/steward (makes sense)

Obviously, nothing can be found for such names as Muffy, Binky. Rattles, and Slink. Turned up with nothing for Rubella and Vecita too.

If you count Muffy and Binky's first names...

Mary (bitter, rebellious) Alice (loyal). Rather fitting for Muffy's maverick personality, the "loyal" part even shows from time to time.

Shelley (clearing/meadow on the bank/ledge). I don't know how that could be relevant to Binky's personality.

Interestingly, Mary, Maria, Marina and Molly are all linguistic variants of the original Hebrew "Miryam".

I must say, this is a very interesting collection of research!

I'm particularly amused by Jenna (fair phantom), Prunella (little plum), and Oliver (elf army).  Seriously, these are pretty far into "wtf" territory.  Laughing
In terms of fitting names, I definitely concur about Molly and Mary/Muffy.  I can also see it about Francine being "free" with how non-conformed she is to the traditional female gender role.

Try Mary and Shelley instead of Muffy and Binky.

My bad. I thought Binky's name was Shelby not Shelley. Either way, yeah.

I'm going to have to look through one of my friend's dA gallery, I seem to recall he once did a pic of Brain razzing Arthur over his name, considering Arthur is an aardvark, and therefore the name is more suitable for him for being a bear, since Arthur means bear.
