The Unofffical All-Purpose BINKY Discussion Thread

Post by MarleyandPal96 on Wed Nov 12, 2014 5:08 pm

I just saw the two BINKY episodes and even if they're *SPOILER ALERT* fakes, I think we should have a dicussion about this band that never got a home video release.

Awe-oh-we-a-wea-weah-weah!

Well... Inga sure is hot stuff, Moms and I can attest to that. Razz

BINKY sure is funny in hindsight, because they were kind of like the in-universe Gorillaz before the Gorillaz ever existed.

But the episode is a pretty clever satire at how one song can become so insanely popular that it catapaults the group behind it into instant celebrity... I can think back to 2000 when "Who Let the Dogs Out?" gave Baha Men temporary mainstream status, even though they've since they slid back into obscurity... "Call Me Maybe," was that song two years ago: apparently Carly Rae Jepsen was already an obscure singing star up in Canada, but it wasn't until Justin Bieber, "Discovered," her and gave her exposure in the U.S. with "Call Me Maybe," that she became a big star.

BINKY is more or less a parody of Jem, a holographic band from the animated series and toy franchise of the same name. Jem was before my time (my older sister was way into it) but it was the first thing that popped into my mind when I first saw the BINKY episode.

Good point on one-hit-wonders. One song that I can think of that was popular when I was in third grade was "Three Little Pigs" by Green Jelly. I just gave it a listen for the first time in about 20 years and what an awful, terrible song it is (and purposefully so).

I've never seen Jem, but yeah, I've heard of it...

I don't know why, but the idea of an angry garden salad amuses me.

Jem isn't really a hologram. They're actual people in the show...

You're right. The "hologram" part refers to their band garb being projected onto them.

Alas, looks like I'm a little late to this topic.
Regarding Inga, I absolutely concur.  I love her full chin and Nordic features...

...and the rest of her too, of course. Cool

You know what's funny? I remember in school, that was actually part of the dress code for girls: shorts, skirts, and dresses have to come either below your fingertips, or just above your knees, whichever is longer... Inga's dress doesn't come close to either, but who am I to complain? Dig dem gams! Twisted Evil

They remind me of the Vocaloid bunch, just older and less kawaiidesu. I would have thought they were a parody of ABBA, but the holograms just scream for prototypical Vocaloids.

The song itself is a bit jarring when you read the translated lyrics. It begs the question of how it made its way to Arthur, much less remaining uncensored to this day. What a Face

On that token, did you know the well-known Muppet song, "Mahna-Mahna," actually originated from a 1960s Italian porno film?

Yup - it's especially twisted when you realize they used the same bit on Sesame Street, another "kid's show".

No snowths here - just those Kermit looking girls and some hippie looking thing that eventually became Bip Bipadotta. This is the version I remember seeing years ago when it was used on an anniversary special. I never saw the Muppet Show version until later on.

I thought of another one: "The Girls of Rock n Roll," has long been associated as being one of The Chipettes' signature songs, but it's only been within the last couple of years that I learned it actually originated from a B-grade teen beach movie a few years before that... and it was apparently written by the same songwriter who wrote that godawful Olivia Newton-John song, "Phyiscal."
