The Case of the Girl with the Sad Face Alternate Interpretation

Post by Snowth Poogle on Sun Nov 16, 2014 8:27 pm

I said it before, and it's been said by others before, art is interpretation, and it's always interesting to hear other people's theories about certain plot elements or other things that come up in ARTHUR all the time, but I think this one takes the cake.

So, in "The Case of the Girl with the Sad Face," Fern eventually reveals that she was feeling sad, "For no reason," and that it happens to her occasionally (I still say it was the rain, kids hate rain)... but really, who gets sad for "no reason"? There must have been a reason she was so sad, otherwise she wouldn't have been sad.

Well, after watching the episode again on YouTube and reading through some of the comments (yes, I'm guilty of doing that... sometimes comments are hilarious and more entertaining than the video), there is apparently an alternate interpretation to the episode that quite a few others out there have... this theory is that the real reason Fern was so sad is because...

She was having her first period.

Wow. Suspect

The funniest thing is that I'm 50% convinced that was the legitimate, intentional (albeit unspoken) reason. lol!

Fern is a little young to be having a menarche that early, by about 3 to 4 years. She might have to see a doctor about that if that's the case. Her hormones are all out of whack.

She must be an early bloomer.  Just look at all those conspicuous red splotches on her umbrella, too...

...as they look ever-upwards at the looming prospect of adulthood.  Symbolism at its finest.
