Strange/Trippy Movies

Post by Snowth Poogle on Sat 15 Mar 2014 - 21:27

Moms basically inspired me to make this thread.

You know, every once in a while, you'll come across a movie that pretty much leaves you scratching your head and wondering what it was that you just saw, or a movie that's so bad it mesmerizes you, or a movie that's so utterly strange and trippy you wonder what was going through the filmmakers' minds as they made it... since everybody here seems to have an affinity for the strange and bizarre, share some of the strangest movies you've ever seen.

I'm starting my list with the 70s B-movie GREASER'S PALACE that Moms shared with me recently: you've got Sidney Freedman from M*A*S*H as a zoot suit-wearin' Jesus Christ that has parachuted to earth and is on his way to Jerusalem to become... an actor/singer/dancer, but on his way, treks through the desert, where he meets a number of... interesting people, such as a guy who keeps getting killed by his father because he may be gay, a man dressed as a nun for no reason, a midget and an old man living as a gay couple, and... oh gosh, I can't keep track of all the weirdos in this movie. Razz

Speaking of which, there's also FUR: A PORTRAIT OF DIANE ARBUS, which was a biopic about Sidney Freedman's (Allan Arbus) wife, Diane, who was a mentally disturbed photographer (Nicole Kidman played her). Now, I haven't seen all of this movie in its entirety, so I can't really give too much of a constructive opinion on it, but the little of what I have seen makes me think it wouldn't make sense or seem right even if you were high!

DROOL is another one. So, the story is an oppressed housewife kills her abusive husband, which upsets her kids because they favored him over her, so their next door neighbor (a single black lady) packs them up with her and they drive off for somewhere before the police arrive, and to find somewhere to bury the body, and along the way, the housewife and the neighbor lady become lesbian lovers, much to the kids' (especially her hormonal teenage daughter) shock and horror.

A smashing idea, I was long considering recommending some of the less-comprehensible movies I've had the pleasure of watching over the years to the forum.   Smile

Although very few things in the history of humanity can match GREASER'S PALACE, a few movies along the same lines are Alejandro Jodorowsky's EL TOPO, HOLY MOUNTAIN and FANDO Y LIS.  All three contain a lot of similarly absurd moments, but blended with a somewhat more serious artistic atmosphere.  EL TOPO, like GREASER'S PALACE, is a spiritual acid Western epic with more of an Eastern, Buddhist influence.  HOLY MOUNTAIN, by contrast, is set in a completely disjointed surreal world and involves Jesus Christ, a legless midget and the filmmaker climbing a mountain in search of enlightenment.

A more modern masterpiece is DEAD MAN, starring Johnny Depp.  Curiously also a spiritual Western that's a combination of drug-induced absurdity and high-art symbolism (see a trend here?), it's about an accountant who happens to be named William Blake, like the famous poet/artist.  After sustaining a bullet to the chest, he wanders through Indian territory and gradually transforms into an outlaw and the real William Blake at the same time.  If this sounds strange, it is.  Despite having an A-list cast (Robert Mitchum, Alfred Molina, Billy Bob Thornton, etc.) and soundtrack by Neil Young, the movie easily falls into the category of baffling nearly everyone who sees is - including Roger Ebert, who could make no logical sense of it.

Then there's David Lynch.  He probably needs no introduction. ERASERHEAD, LOST HIGHWAY, INLAND EMPIRE...his movies are less silly and more on the side of psychological, figurative, surrealist puzzles.  If you've seen any one of his films, you undoubtedly left it with the feeling that you couldn't quite express in words how the movie made sense on its face, but that it nonetheless made sense on a more figurative, symbolic level.  Most of his movies involve a main character with a psychological or personal problem who's visited by mysterious figures from a dream world as reality begins to break down and the line between reality, metaphor, and hallucination becomes less and less clear.

THE CAT IN THE HAT is definitely on my list of top 10 movies that I like that everybody else hates... right up there with BEE MOVIE, THE COUNTRY BEARS, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, ELF, GOOD BURGER, HOME ALONE 3, KANGAROO JACK, MUPPETS FROM SPACE (and KERMIT'S SWAMP YEARS), and SUPER MARIO BROS.

The washitonians And the tales from the hood.
They're horror comedy movies with a really surreal twist.
Especially that tales from the hood, it has really psychological moving moments that really make you stop and think.

Like this one gang banger who gets into a small scuffle with a rival gang but gets out numbered and shot, when he's injured the rival gang members are shot by police men and they take the gang banger to a secret prison/laboratory where he's subjected to the same shit that Alex from clock work orange had to go through, the guards try to make him reflect on killing his own race, and he's then submerged in a dark room where he hallucinates all the of the people and loved ones he's killed in the past, then the twist ending happens and it turns out he's been unconscious after being shot up by the rival gang and they finish him off.

Spoiler alert.

I'm sure Salvador Dali needs no introduction here, since he's basically the 20th Century's High Priest of WTF (not to mention one of history's greatest painters).  During his earlier years, he was responsible for some of the most screwed up short films ever made.  Here's one, in all of its eyeball-slashing glory.

From Robocop 2. A shit movie, but I still have a special place in my heart for it.

Probably one of the last times stop-motion effects were ever used in a Hollywood movie...

It scared the bejeezus out of 6-year-old me.

Hah, I specifically remember that scene and how terrifying it was when I saw it at the theater as a kid.
What makes it so effective, in addition to the jittery stop-frame animation, is the fact that the cyborg is so thin you don't suspect there's a charred, bloody, screaming skull tucked away in there.

To make matters even worse, Proto-Ronald was also keen on accosting young children and teaching them the valuable life lesson that it's perfectly okay to talk to strangers so long as they're dressed up like homeless clowns an reek of week-old boiler grease.
