PLEASE READ: Note Regarding Forum Conduct

Post by Snowth Poogle on Thu Jun 18, 2015 8:33 pm

Ho-ho-ho! Homeless Santa here, bringing tidings of comfort and joy! On a serious level.

It's been brought to my personal attention and I have also been making observations that things are becoming just a little too dramatic around here lately - and I'm not talking about the good kind of drama, such as Molly's pre-pubescent hormones acting up, or Francine's inner torment regarding her secret feelings for Muffy, or Fern's schizophrenia, or Prunella having fantasies about Marina through rosie palms, or even Bud taking off his hat. We're talking about high school-level drama. Little spats, disputes, disagreements, etc. that end up derailing threads off-topic, and over personal matters such as religion and sexuality.

Please try to remember that the Slums is an open forum, and we welcome anyone who wants to come and revel in our craziness around here, irregardless of what their religion or sexual orientation may be. Please also remember that like with any public forum, we are all entitled to our own opinions, and as such, we need to be respectful of them - if you don't agree with someone over what they think, believe, feel, etc., that's okay . . . you just don't have to go into a long-winded arguement about it.

Like I said, the Slums are all about embracing craziness and insanity, after all, what are we but a bunch of ARTHUR fans who never really quite grew up? However, just because we never really grew up doesn't mean we need to get into little playground squabbles.

My apologies if I may seem like I'm coming off as dictatorial lately, it's certainly not my intention, however, as Moms isn't able to devote as much time as he would like to the Slums, it's a responsiblity of mine as his Homeless Santa to keep things under control around here, not just for him, but for the entire community. So, let's just all take some chill pills, chillax, and settle down a little, what say we?

Though it looks like I'm coming into this one a little bit after the fact, I was provided with a screenshot of the posts in question before they were trimmed.  Suffice it to say once again that I approve this message.

Discussing speculative topics like characters' future sexualities, potential relationships, subtext, etc. is one of the most amusing elements of our community.  That said, it can be just as easily accomplished without any sort of discriminatory sentiment leaking in.  I deeply regret that any of our long-standing members might have taken exception to anything that transpired before it could be trimmed and adjusted (thanks again to Snowth, our tireless Homeless Santa who always manages to deliver those presents on time).  The concern is entirely understandable.  In fact, I'm glad that the issue was raised when it came up.  Notions about people of a particular sexual orientation requiring some sort of special forgiveness as if they're doing something wrong is potentially offensive to the 50-60% of our community members who identify as LGBT.

There really aren't very many rules around here at all, aside from restrictions on hardcore pornography and blanket discrimination of others on basis of factors such as ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, etc.  Discrimination can be implicit as well as explicit.  While we're a community built on freedom of expression, that has to be tempered against the principle of tolerance from time to time.

And remember...

Just to re-affirm, "crap" is most certainly not a swear word. Even if it was, that sort of shit is just absolutely fucking fine around here.

Irregardless, that's another thing too: there's no need to call anyone out like that, that's just baiting for more flame wars.

While we're on the subject, however, Luigi's had a history of rather peculiar behavior, which is one of the reasons why he's here in the first place (always room for someone with an obsession with seeing Bud take off his hat). While the matter has already been looked into and dealt with (if it continues to need such, we'll look into it more deligently), it's best to try to resolve these matters private rather than pointing fingers and calling people out.

Okay, I'm bumping this thread, because it needs to be bumped.

People: we need to seriously put a curb on the drama around here, and it needs to happen now. I know the Slums is a free forum where we're all allowed to be as loose, carefree, and crazy as we want to be, but that doesn't mean that we still don't expect you to be civil around here as well. We value our community and want it to remain a friendly and inclusive environment; I'm not going to name names, but I am receiving way too many PMs from different people with complaints of other members' conduct and behavior, and frankly, I'm getting a little tired of it. We want people to come here and have a good time, but when we lose people because they're fed up with other members they have issues with, then something needs to be done, and that something needs to be done right now. We expect you to treat each member on this forum with the kind of respect that you would expect them to treat you with: if you don't agree with someone else in terms of touchy issues such as religion, sexuality, disorders, disabilities, or anything else of that matter, then simply don't discuss it. This brings me to another point: I think from this point on, it would probably be in everyone's best interest if we refrain from going into our personal problems that we have, whether in real life, or on other forums of sites - I've received a lot of complaints about this as well, and I say enough is enough. I want to see less negativity around here: no more personal sob stories, no more disputes on various topics, no more arguing with people who you don't agree with or don't agree with you; we need to bring more positive vibes to this place and bring a sense of community and unity back here again.
